ACTION ITEMS AND OTHER NEWS

02/12/03 - Notice
I no longer update this webpage. I will probably have some sort of political webpage in the future. For now, please support the University Democrats at UT-Austin. I'm the president. Thanks.

07/04 - Happy Fourth of July!
It's been quite a summer! Good news out of the U.S. Congress... The Democratic version of the Patients Bill of Rights passed in the Senate despite dozens of GOP attempts to derail it. Now, finally, real reform is on the way, if Bush doesn't veto. Furthermore, the House is telling Bush not to drill. Not in National Monuments, not in the Gulf of Mexico and not in the Great Lakes, and Bush's approval ratings are dropping every month.

I'm working for the Texas Fair Trade Coalition this summer. In Dallas, we're targeting Eddie Bernice Johnson. Please contact her, and urge her to oppose "Fast Track" authority for Bush. Here are her numbers:
Dallas: (214) 922-8885
Irving: (972) 253-8885
Washington: (202) 225-8885

Please send a letter to the Dallas Morning News opposing Fast Track. For more info, Click Here

Another current issue is stem cell research. I strongly support this critical research, and I urge everyone to contact their Senators and urge them to support this important research. To see my letter, Click Here

Statewide, its a different story. Gov. Rick "Let's kill the Retards" Perry vetoed everything that any of his conservative pals told him to. This includes the bill that would have banned executing the mentally retarded. It was a sad day, and we will defeat Rick Perry in 2002.

05/24 - "THANK YOU JIM!" TTP-Dallas joins Millions nationwide praising the decision of Sen. Jim Jeffords (I-VT) to defect from the GOP. This is evidence of the divisiveness of the conservative, Bush administration. This move gives Democrats a Senate majority! This means that ultra-conservative legislation and judges can now be stopped in Senate committees. We should all be thankful for both Sen. Jefford's decision and the strong leadership of Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle.
Thank Sen. Jeffords for helping preserve choice: Click Here

04/27 - Bush Protest (4/27) in Austin Recap:
Austin ? Chanting "He's not our president" and "Stop the toxic Texan now!" about 150 protesters gathered about a block from the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, where President Bush spoke Friday.
The demonstrators shouted into bull horns, passed out pamphlets and carried signs that read, "This is a de-mockery, not a democracy" and "Tell Bush we won't go back."
The diverse group made up of young and old expressed opposition to the close presidential election, the former governor's federal environmental policy and the death penalty.

02/16 - Thanks for all who attended the Scalia Protest. It was a great success! We got radio, TV and Newpaper coverage and the protest went very smoothly. For that, a special thanks to SMU, for allowing us a permit to peacefully protest in a visable, yet non-intrusive manner. We greatly appriciate the support of the SMU Democrats for helping us receive a permit to protest. Thanks all!

01/22 - Thanks for everyone that showed up at the Inaugural Protest in Dallas. I wish that we could have made it to D.C., but I'm proud to say that we were part of nationwide protests that drew 20,000 in D.C, 15,000 in San Francisco, 5000 in L.A., 800 in Austin, 1000 in Tallahassee, and thousands more from Hilo, Hawaii to Burlington, Vermont.

Dallas Protest Recap:
There was an anti-Inaugural protest in Dallas on Saturday, January 20th. About 80 people attended. We started out at the JFK Memorial Plaza, but soon marched three blocks to the 6th Floor Museum (by Dealy Plaza) area where we joined other protesters where there was higher visibility. We had several chants and there were lots of signs ranging from "Hail to the Thief", "Re-Elect Gore 2004", "Bush Cheated", etc.

12/22 - George W. Bush is now "officially" the president-elect. Unfortunately, all the votes were never counted in Florida, therefore, we have no choice but to seriously question his legitimacy. This movement will continue as a force to:

  • Work for election reforms.
  • Work to increase public awareness of the injustice of the 2000 Presidential Election.
  • Question the legitimacy of Bush's "presidency".
  • Oppose Bush's right-wing agenda on local, statewide and national levels, as he has no national mandate.

12/13 - Thank you Justice Stevens. Your honorable dissent conveys our feelings perfectly:

"Although we may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this year's presidential election, the identity of the loser is perfectly clear. It is the nation's confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law" -Justice Stevens

12/09 - Kudos to the Florida Supreme Court for ruling that All Votes Count - and ordering a recount of the 43,000 "undervotes". Shame on the U.S. Supreme Court (5-4) for their partisan interference in a state issue.

12/08 - Wear an orange ribbon on your lapel to show your support for democracy - that you believe that the people should choose the president - not selected by the U.S. Supreme Court.

11/18 Protest Summary:
The 11/18 PRO-DEMOCRACY RALLY was held at the JFK Memorial at 1 PM. We marched around the court house, then later, we protested in front of the WFAA/Dallas Morning News (BELO building), protesting the media bias for George W. Bush. The group was fired up...one man even burned a 3 foot voter registration card - Michael
