Thousands of Spanish Protesters Slam Bush Visit
Los Angeles Times - http://www.latimes.com/wires/wpolitics/20010610/tCB00a7899.html
MADRID--Thousands of Spaniards marched peacefully
through central Madrid Sunday to protest against a visit by President
Bush, who will kick off a tour of Europe with a one-day stay in
the capital.
Security was tight as up to three thousand people
blocked the streets, according to police estimates. Protesters waved
banners reading "Bush Go Home" and chanted slogans ahead of the
president's arrival Tuesday.
Among a wide-ranging list of complaints, demonstrators
shunned embargoes against Cuba and Iraq, U.S. missile defense plans,
the death penalty and Bush's decision to reject the Kyoto global
warming pact.
Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh is scheduled
to die by lethal injection Monday just a few hours before Bush embarks
on his six-day trip to Europe.
Carlo Acero, a member of a Spanish environmental
group, joined the chorus of opposition to the death penalty and
Bush's stance on the environment.
"I am here because of this imperialist president
who thinks the world is his garden... the world is bigger than the
U.S.," he said.
The demonstration is organized by a coalition
of several dozen groups which say they will do everything possible
to keep the protests peaceful.
Tuesday night they will hold a second demonstration
in front of the U.S. embassy.
The World Bank recently canceled a conference
on poverty in Barcelona fearing confrontation from anti-globalization
groups.
Spanish officials said security would be tight
during the presidential visit but that no "extraordinary" measures
were being taken.
