~Two Cubans Released From L.A.

Two Cubans in the Dodgers' minor league system have been released from their contracts by the baseball commissioner, who found they were improperly signed by Los Angeles. First baseman Juan Diaz and outfielder Josue Perez were declared free agents, as they had requested on the grounds that the Dodgers had kept them from seeking fair contracts. Commissioner Bud Selig essentially agreed with them, according to spokesman Patrick Courtney, who confirmed Tuesday the two were cut loose from their contracts. Teams are barred from holding tryouts in Cuba and engineering defections, but the players contended that the Dodgers held secret tryouts for them and then helped them leave the country so the club could sign them. In addition to losing Diaz and Perez, the Dodgers were also fined an undisclosed amount according to The New York Times on Tuesday. Diaz was in his fourth season in the Dodgers' organization. He is 23 and was signed by the Dodgers in 1996. Perez, 21, was signed last year. The players were signed in Dominican Republic by the scouting supervisor for the Dodgers. They said the were told that if anyone asked, they should say they say the reached the Dominican Republic on their own.

~The Kingdome and Griffey

The Kingdome closed its doors to baseball today and it was Griffey that appropriately provided the final heroics. The superstar center fielder belted a three-run homer and made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Juan Gonzalez of a three-run blast to give the Seattle Mariners a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers. No player hit more homers at the Kingdome than Griffey, who hit his 198th there off Aaron Sele to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead in the first inning. The first came on April 10, 1989, when he homered on the initial pitch he saw at the Kingdome. "I played here 11 years. This is the only place I know as home," Griffey said. "It felt like the '95 and '97 playoffs and Opening Day. That's what ballplayers play for."

~Reds in First

The Cinncinati Reds are now in first place after sweeping the Astros in there 3 game series. I think this surprised everybody seeing that the Astros are probaly the best team in the National Leauge this year. Many people thought the Reds would never be higher than 3rd, but they have shown that the are major contenders for the World Series.

~Final Game at the Kingdome

The Mariners played there final game in the Kingdome this Sunday. They finished off well. They beat the Texas Rangers 5-2, and had a sell out crowd of over 56,000 people, who were all sad to see the Dome go. I myself am glad to see they are moving onto a grass field. You must understand that the grass at Safco Field will probaly add 2 years on to Griffey's carrer or maybe even more. The astro turf in the Dome is very hard on the knees of outfeilders. Yet, there will be many great memories of the Kingdome when it's gone. The confrence championships in 95' and 97', Griffey with his record setting 6 homeruns in the playoffs, and many many more great memories. We will miss it but in other ways we'll be glad it's gone.
