Types of Boats

There are two types of boats to row in. Sweep Boats, where each rower has one oar, and usually has a coxwain. And, there are sculling boats where each rower has two oars, and usually has no coxwain.

Sweeping

Eight (8+) - Eight sweep rowers with a coxswain. Eights are ~ 18.5 m long and weigh about 250 lbs.

Coxed Four (4+) - Four sweep rowers with a coxswain.

Coxless Four (4-) - Four sweep rowers without a coxswain. Steering is achieved by a rudder that is attached to a cable that is connected to one of the rower's foot stretchers.

Coxed Pair (2+) -Two sweep rowers with a coxswain

Coxless Pair (2-) - Two sweep rowers without a coxswain. Steering is the same as a coxless four.

Sculling

Single (1X) One Rower or sculler. Singles are about 8m long and less than a 0.3m wide. Racing singles can weigh as little as 30lbs

Double (2X) Two scullers.

Quadruple (4X) Four scullers. Usually refered to as a "quad"
