Rated: R- Nonstop Violence, Language and Some Nudity
Peter and Bobby Farrelly made themselves famous with their hilarious 1994 comedy “Dumb and Dumber”.  Although that title fit the movie pretty well, I’ve just seen a movie and it’s sequel that could put that name to better use.  “Resident Evil” and "Resident Evil: Apocalypse” are those two movies.  The former was dumb, but a lot of fun which kept me watching to the end, entertained.  The latter, well, didn’t.
“Resident Evil: Apocalypse” is the second sad exception to the sequels that were awesome this summer.  “The Chronicles of Riddick” was the other.  This film continues the story of Alice (Milla Jovovich) and her encounter with the Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T Virus which, in the first film, was accidentally spread throughout Raccoon City.  Basically it kills the ones it affects, but then turns them into zombies.  So now, I consider this about the 100th zombie film to come out in the last couple years – leaving me impatiently waiting for “Shaun of the Dead” to be released later this month.
“Resident Evil 2” is a mixture of an action film, sci-fi, and horror.  However, none of those aspects work.  None of them are successful.  Now you could argue that the action is pretty good – okay fine – but it’s how the filmmakers decided to approach the action that made it pointless.  All they wanted was action, and no reason for it is ever given.  And for that matter most of it is so flashy and shaky that it’s maddeningly hard to catch everything that’s happening.
I admit that 2002’s “Evil” had excellent special effects.  And even this one does too, to a point.  I enjoyed the zombies.  They were genuinely well done.  I didn’t like the “lickers”, as they’re called, or Nemesis.  Nemesis is a character that only players of the video game will know of, but let’s just say that the video game version is scarier, and you could even argue more real.
The truth about “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” is that it was really bad.  It was a waste of precious time that I could’ve spent, say, watching a quality film.  As for how you feel about it, unless you’re hard core, I’m betting you won’t like it either.  Maybe not. *
