IN THE
BEDROOM
Rated: R- For Some Violence and Language.
The basis of a film can make or break its reputation.  As for a drama, we can’t help but nit-pick at the tiniest of things because there have already been so many great dramas.  We usually don’t care about who directed it or who acted in it; we just want to find the errors.  It is in Todd Field’s In the Bedroom we find the true meaning of drama.
We are plunged into a world of sappy romance, a world that is perfect for two young seeming lovers.  Suddenly, my legitimacy was taken away, for this was not going to be a romance...in fact far from it.  For a time, we don’t comprehend what has happened because so far this movie has been uneventful to the point of boredom.  Now an element of a thriller is added to make this quiet film into an unlikely masterpiece.
It’s a mysterious film in every sense.  As I said, I thought it was going to be a clichéd romance flick with poor performances.  But with Field’s excellent direction (some of the best of 2001) we feel the inner being of each character.  The plot turns from this to that and we don’t even have a notion as to what is going to happen next, making I
n the Bedroom not only a drama, but a thriller, a suspense, and a mystery.
Overall, I was extremely and pleasantly surprised at this film.  It has some of the best performances I’ve seen in a long while.  From Sissy Spacek (
Tuck Everlasting) and Tom Wilkinson (The Patriot), we get their best efforts and best performances of I think each of their careers.  Both were nominated for their performances in the Actor and Actress categories at the Academy Awards for 2001.
I loved this film.  It makes you think, but not to understand the movie.  It’s not hard to understand in any sense, but it makes us think what we would do if we were in the situation the characters are in.  With powerful backdrop, In the Bedroom is a sly, yet subtle masterpiece and receives ****.
