College in Perspective
The Walchand
College of Engineering, Sangli is the oldest technical
institute situated in Surthern Maharashtra. Establishment of this college
in 1947 was entirely owing to the sense of adventure and untiring efforts
of late Shri. Dhondumama Sathe, the founder of the Maharashtra Technical
Education Society, Pune and his trusted colleagues. The college was then
named as "New Engineering College". When the college faced financial problems
in 1995, the State and Central Government and Sathe Walchand Hirachand
Memorial Trust helped the college to come out of woods by extending generous
financial supports. The college was then rechristened as - " Walchand
College of Engineering".
The college
now imparts technical education for Diploma, Degree, Post Graduate and
Post Diploma Courses. This year it is intended to celebrate the completion
of 50 years by this college in a very befitting manner. It is a great coincidence
that at the same time the nation is also celebrate the golden jubilee of
independence.
Profile
WCE is situated
between Sangli and Miraj on a piece of land admeasuring 100 acres. It is
a Government aided private institute affiliated to the Shivaji University,
Kolhapur. The college has spacious and well equipped laboratories for Civil,
Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering branches alongwith
basic laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Geology. Well equipped workshops,
drawing halls are also provided. The total building and equipment of the
college are estimated to be worth about Rs. 9 crores.
Faculty
The college
has a team of well-qualified and devoted staff numbering 109 for degree
wing and 49 for Diploma wing. Many of them have Ph.D. qualifications and
all the rest posses master's degree. Around 110 skilled and experienced
technicians, instructors etc. help students in acquiring practical skills.
The spacious
library of the college holds a collection of over 36,000 books, 10,000
volumes of technical magazines accumulated over the past five decades.
It subscribes to 25 technical magazines, has six books schemes and provides
study room facility during normal and extended hours.
Computer Facilities
Institute
has good setup for computing facilities. The institute is conducting short
term courses and consultancy work besides the routine teaching work at
under graduate and post graduate levels. The institute encourages the staff
for various QIP ( Quality Improvement Programs) for their higher studies
especially for M.Tech. and Ph.D. programs. The institute also encourages
the students to undertake their final projects which are need based. The
institute interacts with the industry for carrying out the final year projects
in better way. Based on the various project work reports of the department,
the students and staff members have presented/ published more than 500
research papers.
