Club Oxford Hockey

The Playoffs 2009

Things should heat up a little now

Playoff overtime will be 4 on 4 for 5 minutes.
Ties remain after this.  No shootouts.  No point for an OT loss.

Agro vs Fody's - The regular season shows Agro to be heavily favoured.  Agro won 7 of the 9 meetings, scoring 61 times while allowing 33 against.  The scoring stats show a ridiculous domination by Agro led by Shane Balcomb, Adam Thomson, Jeff Whiteside and Derek Partlo.  Superb goaltending provided by Matt Fallowfield makes this a tall order for Fody's.  A pleasant surprise for team Fody has been the goal scoring provided by Kevin Harrop and Brandon Whitehead.  Chris Sanders and Trevor Glass have ramped it up recently and will need to keep that passion alive for Fody's to be competitive.

Dynamic vs Re/Max - A definite edge to Dynamic over the regular season as they won 6 of the 9 meetings, outscoring Re/Max 48 to 39 in the process.  Dynamic has a more balanced attack.  Brad VanPuymbroeck, Gary Markus, Ryan O'Grady, Jeff White, Jason Lessif and Kevin Ryksen all have 10 goals or more to their credit.  Re/Max will lean heavily on Adam Parrott, Eddie Scruton, Scotty White and Trevor Bradfield to provide their offence.  Special teams will be a factor as we have the most penalized team (red) against the least penalized (white).   Look for this series to go the distance.

'A' Division Finals (6 -point series)

Agro vs Dynamic - Interesting to note that Dynamic was the only team to have a winning record against Agrospray.  Four regulation-time wins each and one shootout win by Dynamic makes it pretty even.  Agro held a slight edge in scoring, 40 to 35, so there doesn't seem to be too much the stats can tell us.  Agro is "front-end" loaded. They have the firepower to dominate a game if they are given any room.  Dynamic may have the best defensive core in the league.  They held Re/Max to just 6 goals in the semis.  Agro will use their speed and playmaking.  Dynamic will counter with a more defensive strategy.  Should be a great series.

Agro  4    Dynamic  3
Agro are becoming the "cardiac kids" of Club O with another late rally to pull this one out of the fire.  Dynamic had the lead a couple of times based on the 2-goal performance of Brad VanPuymbroeck and some shifty playmaking by Gary Markus who scored once but might have had about three with any luck.  Jeff Whiteside, Adam Thomson, Derek Partlo and Shane Balcomb did the damage for Agro.  Special teams were the difference as Agro had 2 powerplay markers as well as a short-handed goal.
Mar 25
Agro  5    Dynamic  3
Agro opened up a 4-0 lead but this one got interesting as Dynamic scored 3 in a row to make a game of it.  Their inability to cash in on a 5 on 3 powerplay proved to be costly.
Mar 29
Dynamic  4     Agrospray  2
The last one was an empty netter with 6 seconds left so this was a nail-biter until the end.  Agro had a 2-0 lead but Dynamic didn't quit.  Three straight goals put them in the drivers seat but some penalty problems made it interesting and it looked like Agro might tie it up on the dreaded "delay of game" as Dynamic fired the puck over the glass (there will be an NHL playoff game lost this way) but Pit held the fort and red stays alive in the series.

Congratulations to Agrospray for winning the league title.  You guys were a very talented team and you raised the bar of competition for everybody else to make this a very memorable season.  Derek Partlo had the winning goal, his second of the night, and Matt Fallowfield played a great game in net to preserve the win.

Agro  5     Fody's  4
Coach Fody will remember this one for a long time.  The 'underdogs'  had a 4-1 lead with just over 7 minutes to play until the wrecking crew of Partlo, Balcomb and Whiteside ruined the party.
Mar 8
Fody's  3     Agro  3     Overtime tie
Some tough luck for Fody's who deserved a win but a determined Agro team tied it with 15 ticks left in regulation.  Fody's enjoyed a rare 2-man advantage in overtime but came up shy.  This series has been a character-builder for the green team and it will be interesting to see what they can do on Sunday.  So far they haven't made life easy for Agro.
Mar 15
Agro  3    Fody's  2     Overtime
Fody's are requesting shorter games.  If it wasn't for the last minute of play these guys would be moving on to the finals.  Another tough finish as Jeff Bouck puts one in off his pants with half a minute remaining to tie it and Mike Franklin scores a powerplay winner in the OT.  Excellent goaltending at both ends of the rink.
Mar 18
Agro  7    Fody's  5
The "never say die" group of Fody hockey players can hold their heads up high after this series.  The Agro team commented about how the men in green "never stopped skating".  Down in the series and trailing in this game 4-1, it would have been easy to "throw in the towel" but Fody's answered the bell with 2 quick second-period goals to move to within one.  Another Agro goal followed by another Fody goal.  Then another Agro goal followed by another Fody goal.  Then an empty-netter to finish.  Congratulations to Agro for winning the series and congratulations to the Fody team for showing the character to compete.

Dynamic  4     Re/Max  3     Overtime
Not a good night for a popularity contest as one particular referee called a penalty shot in regulation with the score tied and a penalty in the 4 on 4 overtime.  As far as I can tell, this was not well received.

Mar 8
Dynamic  8     Re/Max  2
Did you hear the one about the ref who called 2 overtime penalties ?  Good thing it wasn't in this series.  Re/Max has to do a little reflection here.  They are too good a team to go out 3 straight.
Gary Markus led this rout with a hat-trick, while Jeff White and Brad Alexander had 3-point nights.
The veteran Craig Pitter lives for the "second season" and is playing very well right now.

Dynamic  6     Re/Max  1
The smart money may be on Dynamic to win it all.  This team is playing some excellent hockey right now and rolled over a pretty good Re/Max team 3 straight.

'B' Division Finals (6 -point series)

TVT vs Copper Mug - According to the stats this series is weighted in favor of TVT who won 6 of the 9 regular-season meetings, outscoring the Mug 23 to 15 in the process.  Both teams took roughly the same amount of penalties in the regular season so special teams shouldn't be too much of a factor but you never know with those refs.  TVT has 5 "top-ten" scorers, Mug has only 3 and this may hurt them.  Defensively, the teams are even.  Goaltending is also a  toss-up but if Tim Hantz can play like he did in the semis the Mug will have a chance.  Orpie hasn't been tested too heavily in the playoffs just yet and he has been idle for well over a week so Mug needs to shoot the lights out in game one.

Copper Mug  6     TVT  0
An outright shocker as TVT left the ice wondering what happened.  Muggers have "Mo" on their side and are playing their best hockey of the season.  Tell me that was a sparelister wearing #15 white or else Darcy Haggith is getting pulled in for a urine test.  Patrick Whitehead has been showing all kinds of hustle in the post-season and it paid off with 2 hard-earned goals.  The brothers Gehring had one each and Bob Evans and Jeff Holman also added singles.  This was a night where all the stars were aligned for the Mug and it looked like somebody put a hex on TVT.  Who was that "Ex" of yours Orpie, the one with the unusual laugh who used to "hex" things?  Perhaps a friendly phone call is in order just to get your world right side up?

Copper Mug  4     TVT  3
Congratulations to the Copper Mug players for a great playoff run.  You guys worked hard and showed lots of hustle.  You were very deserving of this championship.  Tim Hantz was superb between the pipes.

'B' Division Semifinals (6 -point series)

TVT vs Glass - The regular season shows a distinct domination by TVT who won 7 of the 9 meetings.  TVT scored 41 times on Glass in the regular season while only allowing 17 against.  Glass will need their goaltender at the top of his game and will have to find a way past the stifling defence of TVT to get some quality shots on Orpen.  TVT has a balanced attack with big contributions from forwards Steve Lavier, Steve Balazs, Ron Gasparetto, and Tyler Sergeant. Mike Evanitski has a hot stick right now and D-man Joel Breddy has been racking up the points.  Glass answers with Clayton Stubbs and Marty Maerten but needs more contributions from their proven goal scorers to be effective in this series.  Glass is hoping TVT will panic with the added pressure of televised games.

Copper Mug vs Martin's - The Mug has won 6 of the 9 regular-season meetings and holds a 37 to 25 goal-scoring advantage.  Martin's will have to contain Jeff Holman, Matt Gehring , Sam Edwards and Bob Evans while the Muggers will be paying close attention to Doug Falkins, Pat Light and Mike Martin.  Mug has an edge in goal with the playoff veteran Tim Hantz between the pipes.  Rookie Mike Schmeltz has had some excellent games but needs to be more consistent in these playoffs in order for Martin's to advance.

TVT  4     Glass  3
TVT wasted no time establishing control with a goal in the first minute of play and 3 more in the first to open up a 4-1 lead at the half.  The amazing Jason Vandommele put a scare into TVT as he scored not one but two second period goals to give Glass some confidence going into Sunday.

TVT  1     Glass  0
A good battle by Glass but Murphy's Law prevailed and whatever could go wrong, did.  A couple of late penalties puts them 2 men down and a disputed goal seals their fate.

TVT applies double coverage on Glass scoring sensation Jay Vandommele to effectively shut down  their offence allowing Orpie to cruise to yet another shutout victory.

Doug Falkins and Mike Martin scored 2 goals each to lead Martin's.  "Young-at-heart" Bobby Alexander had a goal and an assist (one item shy of a "Shanny").  Muggers ran into penalty trouble - which is not unusual when you are up against the convener's team.

Copper Mug  2     Martin's  1
Muggers were hustling and Tim Hantz was the star of this game with many incredible saves that left Martin's shaking their heads.  Brian Beaumont scored the winner.

Matt Gehring and spare Brent Iler score 2 each as Mug takes the lead in this series.

Mar 18
Martin's  2     Copper Mug  1
A sensational game by spare goaltender Dave Moore enables Martin's to survive for a showdown with the Muggers on Sunday.  Martin's were badly outshot in the second period but were hanging on to a tie and the game appeared to be headed for overtime.  A late goal by clutch player Pat Light, his second of the game, gives Martin's the win.

Mar 22
Copper Mug  4     Martin's  1
Two goals by Jeff Holman and another super game by tender Tim Hantz has the Muggers off to the finals.  Schmeltzie was nodding off so coach Jammer pulled him for backup Craig Pitter but the Mug scored on him too.  No stopping these guys.
