ABC Soaps in Depth, August 3 2004:

Sonny and Carly had been driven by resentment, jealousy, and distrust for so long that civility seemed all but impossible -- that is, until he took a bullet in the chest and his life teetered on the edge. Maybe it was the painkillers talking, but as he lay quietly in his hospital bed, he let down his guard with his estranged wife. "The only reason I'm still alive is you," he said as their eyes met, touching Carly to the core. She was the only woman who ever really understood him so completely and loved him so intensely, and he knew it. She listened attentively as he tried to recall his shooting. "The nuns kept telling me that I was asking for you," he told her, knowing that he had something important to say during those touch-and-go hours. "Well, I'm here. You can tell me now," she offered. But he was at a loss, admitting that he couldn't remember what he was being spurred on to say. Somehow, she knew what they both wanted, but they were afraid to be vulnerable with each other ever again. "Maybe it was just as simple as a cry for help, and you wanted to come home," she suggested. Sonny took that in fully, then turned to Carly and said softly, "Home. I guess that's you." Carly's eyebrows furled; she couldn't help but tear up. Neither understood why they had allowed so much anger to affect them for so long...and Sonny was looking for an end. "I want to figure out a way to make all this work," he told her. Their moments of closeness were so quiet, so calm, so filled with positive emotions. Watching Maurice Benard and Tamara Braun work their magic is always a wonder to behold. But when their characters connect, void of protective masks, it becomes riveting. It's no wonder they are the "superest" of supercouples.
