Wightwick Manor
Wightwick Manor
was probably our favorite house, among those we saw on this trip.
The home of a Victorian industrialist who decided to decorate his 1887
Old English-style home with furnishings by Morris and Company, the house
has been enriched by the efforts of the National Trust to gather more Morris,
Arts-and-Crafts, and Pre-Raphaelite works there. The result is a
stunning collection that still looks more like a real home than a museum.
We spent hours looking at Morris wallpapers and fabrics, a variety of Pre-Raphaelite
paintings and sketches, and furniture -- including a bedroom suite owned
by the poet Charles Algernon Swinburne, with painted and carved panels
copying Rossetti paintings. The whole house was open for our exploration,
from bedrooms and nursery to the kitchens.
