Heart Matters Chapter Five:

"I’m here." Ginger smiled at Jeff when he answered the door to his house.

"Hi." He breathed.

"You wanted to talk to me?" She questioned.

"Um…." He glanced nervously at his feet, "Yeah."

"Well.…" She probed him.

"Maybe it can wait til later." He suggested.

"Jeff, what’s going on?"

"Who’s that?" A little boy ran down the stairs and stopped behind Jeff.

"Umm, Aaron, this is Ginger." Jeff introduced the pair.

Ginger didn’t take her eyes off Jeff, who was trying his best to avoid her stare.

"You’re pretty." Aaron spoke to Ginger after a long moment.

"Aaron, come here." Jeff held out his arms and picked Aaron up.

"How old are you?" Ginger suddenly asked.

Aaron held up 4 fingers. "How old are you?"

"Aaron." Jeff silenced him. "Why don’t you go and play until dinner is ready?" Jeff suggested before setting him down.

"Ok, but don’t eat all the food." Aaron warned as he ran out of the room.

After Aaron left, the room was silent. A pin could drop and be heard as a loud call and echo. "Why didn’t you tell me?" Ginger finally asked Jeff.

"I wanted to."

"If you had wanted to, you would have." She pointed out.

"Ok, so you got me there. But I’m telling you now. Ginger, Aaron’s our son."

"How?" She whispered.

"Your parents didn’t want him… my mother did."

"You make it sound horrible."

"Isn’t it though? Parents not wanting their children."

"FINE!" Ginger blurted out, "You win. You’re mom’s the greatest and my parents aren’t."

"I never said that." He pointed out.

"You didn’t have to. My father doesn’t even know I had a baby."

"You already said that. How?" Jeff was still stunned, even though it was the second time he had heard the news.

"My mother never told him. She was too afraid he’d be ashamed of me. So she sent me off to live with the nuns in Kansas." Tears were starting to come to her eyes. "When I was in Kansas all the nuns ever told me was that I’d be lucky if I turned out to be a good citizen."

"Ginger…"

"Do you know how much it hurts to lay in bed night after night and not know where your own child is? And letting yourself think that you’re a failure? It’s horrible."

"Ginger, I didn’t know."

"How could you have? You have everyting."

"Not really."

"What are you talking about?"

"What I really want I can’t have."
