Chapter 0: Doctor's Office.
Susan Dillan sat in the office of Dr. Smith. Her tenyear old son Mark
sat in chair beside her, not exactly knowing what was going on. He did
know that his mom had been sick lately, and they were here to find out
why.
"Ms. Dillan, Susan, we've know each other for a long time. I wouldn't
keep anything from you. And I won't. I'll give it to you straight. You
have a rare form of cancer. If there's a cure, I don't know it. It's
in it's earliest state right now. It will progressively get worse over
the years. I hate to tell you this, but in a few years you will
probably die."
"Now I know your husband came up MIA in the Great War years ago.
You had Mark a few years later. I've offered as much help raising him
as I could, and he's turned out good. He's a strong boy. In another
three years he'll be able to get his training license. Believe me,
you need every penny you can get. The medicine that can at least keep
you in stable condition, is very expensive. I can't stress that
enough."
"When he becomes a trainer, enter him in every tournament you can.
By then, more than likely, you won't be able to work. You'll need
the money that he'll win. I'll help him out as much as I can. I was
a good trainer, way back when. I also know Professor Oak. He's
getting old now, but he still knows his stuff. I'll send Mark his
way when he's ready."
"If I have my way, he'll be a pokemon Legend, and be
able to support you until I can find a cure"
Looking For Legends: Chapter 1: Beginnings
By Chris "myuu2" Sturdy
The great fiery bird rose over the peak like a comet.
A single pair of eyes was viewing this amazing sight.
His name was Mark, and he was a pokemon trainer.
The great bird swooped back under the landscape and out of sight.
He wonder to him self, how had this began?
How long ago had it started, this quest of his?
It was only about a month ago, but it could have been years
in his mind. And it was. He began to think about how it
had began, about his mother, his pokemon, and the other
factors in his life..........
He was sitting by the side of his mother's bed.
Recently she had become very sick and needed medicine.
" Mom, today is the day I am supposed to get my first pokemon,
but I can't leave you here like this" he said. Even though he knew
she couldn't here him, because she was resting. Suddenly, her eye's
opened slowly, and she said "I'll be fine. Besides, we need the money
you'll win in the tournaments to pay for the medicine."
"But mom, will you be alright?" "I said I'll be fine.
Go and get your pokemon."
He stepped out into the bright morning sunshine of Pewter City.
He walked down to the pokemart, where he would be able to pick up his
first pokemon. Dr. Smith ran the shop and was also the town's doctor.
Smith called out to Mark, "Hello Mark. Have you come for you're mother
's medicine?" "No Dr. Smith. I came for my first pokemon"
"You're first pokemon? Are you sure you have enough money to pay for
it?" "Money? I..I didn't know you have to pay for them......"
Dr. Smith said " I thought so. I can't just give you one.
But I can give some pokeballs so maybe you can catch a weak one. Y
ou should be able to find one over in Mt. Moon." Dr. Smith gave Mark
five pokeballs. "Thanks Dr. Smith, but what about my mom?"
"Don't worry, I'll look after her while your gone."
Mark rushed out of the store "Bye Dr. Smith! And Thanks again!"
An hour later, Mark stood in front of the gaping cave that was the
enterence to Mt. Moon. "Well, here I go!" And stepped into the cave........
Chapter 2: GEODUDE
Mark stared at the opening of the great cave, holding a pokeball
in his hand. Maybe he would catch an Onix, or a Clefairy!! He
sprinted into the cave. Finally he slowed down long enough to see
a Paras, crawling along the floor of the cave. "Para??" it said
looking at Mark with worried eyes. Mark grinned for one of the few times in his
life. "Pokeball Go! Catch me my first pokemon!!" He threw the ball
as hard as he could. It bonked the Paras one the head. Soon it was
contained in the ball, and seemed to be stuck inside. One shake. Two
shake. Three...BURST! It broke out of the ball and ran off into the
shadows."PARA PARA PARAS!!!" Mark continued on his trip. Soon he came
across a brown lump in the ground. It seamed to be moving. And making
strange sounds. "Digl Ett Dig Dig Ett Digl" Suddenly it popped up.
It was a Diglett! This pokemon didn't try to run or hide, it just stared at Mark.
"It wants me to catch it" Mark thought. "Pokeball Go!" this time the ball held.
" I got my first pokemon, a Diglett!!" Mark was happier at that moment
then he had ever been in hiss life. Mark started to leave when he head
a great roaring. It sounded like it had come from under his feet! Suddenly,
the ground under his feet fell, dropping him a long way. He landed hard on
the ground, stunning him for a second. He looked up and saw an Onix
terrorizing a colony of Geodudes. Cries of "Geo!!" could be heard from
all around. Then all the Geodudes stacked upon each other and pulled
themselves up to high ledge where the scrambled for safety. Mark
looked around. There was one Geodude left! The Onix reared up and
prepared to smash it! Mark ran a fast as he could, dived, and grabbed
the Geodude. He rolled it to safety, and grabbed the only pokeball at
his waist. "Diglett Go!!" He shouted. It felt so good to have his own
pokemon!! Diglett appeared in front of him and looked up at the giant
Onix. "DIGL!!!! ETTT!! DIGGGGG!!!!" it shouted. " Dig a hole,
Diglett!!" It dove down and dirt flew out of the hole. Onix looked
around at the now missing mole. "ROAR!!!!!!!!" Suddenly Diglett popped
out and slammed Onix in the head! "Diglett, Sand-Attack!"
Diglett kicked up sand in Onix's eyes. Onix Tried to use Tackle, but
missed. "Diglett, use a ground attack!!" Diglett dove under ground
and caused the ground to shake under Onix, almost an Earthquake, but
not quite. The great beast toppled and crashed into a wall! "Pokeball
Go!"
Chapter 3.
One, Click. Two, Click. Three....Click! The Onix was his!! Mark almost
fainted from excitement. Suddenly he remembered the Geodude. Where
was it? He looked around the cave in a panic. There it was, but it
wasn't moving.....
"geo....." It said weakly. It was alive but just barely. It would
have to be taken to a Pokecenter. And soon. Mark look down at
Diglett, "Can you dig us out of here?" "Digl?" It said. No it
couldn't. They were too deep down. "Maybe Onix can. Onix Go!" He
threw the ball and Onix appeared. "ROAR!!!!!" "Left us out of this
cave!" "ROAR!!!!" It bent down and had Mark crawl up on it's back.
Mark called Diglett back to it's ball.
The Onix reared up to it's full height, just high enough to reach the
cliff top! "Thanks Onix, now Return!" It turned into energy and
returned to it's ball. Mark followed his patch back to the entrance
and ran back to Pewter City.
In a short time he was at the pokemon center. A nurse Joy was sitting
at the desk. Mark asked her "could you heal my pokemon? Also I found
this Geodude, and It's hurt real bad." "Sure, I'll tend to it right
away. Aren't you that Mark boy? With the sick mom? She looks a lot
better." Mark breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe she would get better!
Soon the Joy came back. "Your other pokemon are fine now, they just
needed a little rest. But that Geodude of your's, it might take a
little bit to heal because it doesn't have a ball. Why haven't you put
it in one yet?" "Because it's not mine. I found it in Mt. Moon. Onix
was hurting it and the others left it. I rescued it I guess..." Mark
replayed. Joy handed Diglett and Onix back to him.
Mark returned back home to find Dr. Smith standing over his mom. Smith
looked up just in time to see Mark enter the house. "Dr. Smith! How's
my mom doing??" "She doing better, but there's still room for
improvement" "But will she get better?" "Not anytime soon. If ever."
Dr. Smith looked done at the pokeballs at Mark's waist. "You caught
some pokemon! Which ones?"
Mark and Dr. Smith stepped outside of the house. "This one was my
first. Diglett, Go!" He threw the ball and Diglett popped out.
"Digl?" It said looking around. This was the first time it had been
out of the cave. Suddenly it started to shake. "Diglett??" Mark yelled
and ran over to his mole. It started to go into convulsions. Then it
sunk into the ground.
Mark was in a panic. "Diglett?? Where are you?? Are you hurt??" He
started scraping the ground frantically. Suddenly it popped up, but it
was...different. It was bigger for one thing. Then, two other Digletts
popped around it. It had evolved into a Dugtrio!!
"Wow" was all Dr. Smith had to say.
"Want to see my other pokemon Dr. Smith?" Mark asked. "Sure, as long
as this one doesn't evolve" He answered, wiping dirt from his face.
"Onix Go!" He yelled and threw his other ball. "ROAR!!!!!!!" The great
rock snake screamed looking around for an opponent. "ROAR??" It
growled looking at Mark. "Nothing to fight this time Onix. But you can
smash that rock over if you want to." Onix shot forward and smash into
the huge rock. WAM! WAM! WAM!. Finally it burst into a hundred pieces!
Onix looked quite pleased with it's self.
That night Mark went to sleep happy, the first time he had done so in
along time.....
The next day he went to the pokemon center to check on Geodude.
"Finally your back!!" said Joy, looking relieved, "Your Geodude got
better and hasn't kept still one second since you left!" Suddenly
Geodude broke through the glass behind Joy and bounded over to Mark,
just like a puppy.
It jumped into Mark's arms with a happy "Geo" "I think it's happy to
see you" said Joy. At that moment, Mark knew that he had found a
friend for life, maybe even 3 of them.
Chapter 4: Gym
Mark stood at the front of the Pewter City gym. Brock was the leader
here. Mark was going to battle him. Not for the boulder badge, for the
money. He would do it for the money. He would need it for his moms
medicine.
He threw open the huge doors and yelled out "Brock! I challenge you
to a match!" Brock was sitting in his rock chair. "A match you? Very
well. I haven't battled in a while. I need the practice. We will each
use 2 pokemon. Ok?" "Fine with me." Mark replayed.
"Geodude Go" Brock said.
"Dugtrio, I Choose You!" said Mark.
"Geodude, use Rock Throw!" Brock.
"Dugtrio, Dig!" Mark.
Geodude flew up in the air ready to smash the moles, but when he
landed Dugtrio had already went under ground. Geodude stood in one
spot looking useless. Suddenly Dugtrio burst up from the ground,
knocking Geodude clear across the room!
"Geodude Return!" Brock called to his rock.
"Dugtrio Return!" Mark told his moles.
Both trainer yelled out "Onix, GO!"
The two rock snakes come out and started circling each other, like
caged animals.
"Onix Bind Now!" Brock was first to attack.
"Onix Counter it's Bind with a Tackle!" Mark.
Brock's Onix tried wrapping it's self around Mark's Onix, but was
slammed by the Tackle attack.
"Onix, Bide your time, conserve your strength!" Brock.
"Onix, Screech at it, don't hurt it!" Mark had heard of this attack.
Onix would lay perfectly still for a while. All the time the other
pokemon would be wounding it. Then all of a sudden Onix would leer up
and deal a lot of damage to the other pokemon.
Mark's Onix let out a horrible sound that echoed off the walls.
Brock's Onix backed away for it, still keeping up the Bide. Mark's
Onix kept screeching at it, lowering it's defense with every second.
Brock's Onix couldn't take it any more. It reared up and tried a
Tackle attack but missed.
Mark told his Onix to use Rock Throw. It raised up and slammed into
Brock's Onix, KOing it in one hit!
Brock just stared, mouth open. "I can't believe Onix lost! This is
the first time ever!" Brock walked over to Mark. "Here take the
Boulder Badge. It will help you on your pokemon journey." "What
'journey'" Mark asked Brock, "I don't want the badge, I just need the
money for winning the match. My mom is sick, and we need the money to
pay for medicine."
"Money, oh sure." Brock handed over a wad of bills and coins over to
Mark, "But since your not going on a journey, would you mind staying
here at my gym? I could use another trainer. You would get a lot more
fights, and a lot more money if you win." "Sounds like a good deal,
but who would take care of my mom?" "I'm sure Doc Smith would be glad
to!" Brock said, "He has enough help over at the pokemart!"
And so that day, Mark won his first real battle, made some money for
his mom, and became a trainer at the Gym. He knew this would give him
a chance to work with his pokemon and make them stronger. He need to
use Geodude and see what it could do.
Chapter 5: Brock
"Gravler Go!" Mark shouted. The giant rock beast appeared in front of
him. It had evolved just last week and was already at a high level.
The trainer he was facing called up a Rattata. The Gravler smiled. It
knew just what to do, but Mark told it anyway, "Gravler, Rock Throw!"
WAM. The rat had been KO'd. The trainer left, disappointed.
Mark's mentor, Brock, was up in the observation deck and he looked
pleased with Mark's training. He had even built himself a battle arena.
It was very different looking form the main gym. I had many
multi-colored platforms hanging from the ceiling and the floor. Some
were even floating.
Gravler even had it's own perch. Mark had never put it in a pokeball,
since it never left his side anyway. Dr. Smith had been watching his
mom every day since Mark had started at the gym. Luckily she had
finally started getting better. Maybe she would finally get well..or
was that too much to hope for?
Then one day, a boy came into the gym with a Pikachu. His name was
Ash, and he, like so many others, wanted to become a master. Mark knew
that Brock would smash him easily. They both called up there pokemon,
Brock Onix, and Ash his Pikachu. In a short while the battle was over,
with Brock the victor.
After the boy had left, Mark walked up to Brock, congratulating him
on his victory. Brock said, "It was a minor win. I know he'll be back,
sooner or later. And he may win" Mark said, "There's no way that he
could win. He's too weak a trainer. He couldn't even control his poor
Pikachu. I pity it really. Being handled by such a lousy trainer."
The next day Ash was back, and he challenged Brock again. This time
Brock choose Geodude and Ash brought up Pidgeotto. Geodude won that
one. Then Ash again brought up the Pikachu. Amazingly, it won, KOing
Geodude.
Then Brock sent out Onix. The battle seemed to be going Brock's way,
until a fire set off the sprinklers, allowing Pikachu to zap Onix.
Overcome with guilt of using the sprinklers to win, Ash again called
off the match.
Mark asked Brock, "Why did Ash leave when he could have easily won?"
Brock answered, "Because Ash knows to really win you must learn to
respect pokemon, even your opponents." Brock then ran out the door.
Later that day Brock returned to the gym. "Mark, my father returned!
I'm going to leave with Ash. I'm going to take the journey I always
wanted! The only problem is that I have no one to watch the gym.
I may not be coming back for a long while..."
"So, let me guess. You want me to run the gym- to be the leader of
it-until you get back?" Mark interrupted. "Yes, if you think you can
handle the responsibility" "I can. This gym will be run as smoothly
as ever. And when you get back, It'll look like you never left."
And so that day, Brock left the gym, leaving Mark the leader. Instead
of using the main room, he used his training room. Both he and his
pokemon felt comfortable there.
EPILOGUE:
A long way away, two blind men stared into space. The room glowed a
bright blue. "Do you think he's ready yet?" one of them said. "No,
not quite. He will get stronger. So will his pokemon. He is not yet
ready to fight the strong one, the dark one. He will find and
befriend the other decedents of the thirty. Of those who are still
alive."
