son of Daniel & Sarah (Merrill) Chandler of Concord, NH and

Fryeburg, ME;

born 5 May 1769, in Concord, NH;

died 5 April 1815, in North Chatham; buried at Chandler Cemetery,

North Chatham;

married:

SUSAN HARDY of Fryeburg, Maine;

born 21 February 1773;

died 27 March 1841; buried with husband at Chandler Cemetery,

No. Chatham.

Capt. Paul Chandler was a farmer and settled in the Cold River valley at

North Chatham sometime in the 1790's. After his death 5 April 1815, Asa

Eastman was appointed, 7 June 1815, by Ebenezer L. Hall, Judge of

Probate, guardian of Paul's three oldest children by their choice, and of

the six youngest by petition of his widow. The Chandler homestead was

taken over by Paul's son, David; followed by David's son, Asa; followed

by Asa's son, Charles; followed by Charles' son, Harry, who was the last

Chandler to occupy the old homestead.

Paul & Susan (Hardy) Chandler had nine children, as follows:

(1) DORCAS CHANDLER, dau. of Paul & Susan, b. 23 March 1796, in Chatham;

d. 1869; buried with husband at Chatham Center Cem.; m., 14 Nov. 1816,

JOHN LEAVITT of Chatham (1795-1873), son of Thomas Leavitt; ten children

(See family of John Leavitt).

(2) Maj. DAVID HARDY CHANDLER, son of Paul & Susan, b. 26 March 1798, in

Chatham; m., 27 May 1821, MEHITABLE CHARLES. (See family of Maj. David

(3) DANIEL CHANDLER, son of Paul & Susan, b. 19 April 1800, in Chatham;

d. 14 Aug. 1879; buried with wife at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham

(gravestone gives date of death as 14 Aug. 1876); m. 1 Nov. 1832, JANE

WALKER (b. 4 May 1803 or 1804; d. 14 Aug. 1882), dau. of William W.

Walker. Daniel was a farmer at North Chatham. He was sent to the Asylum

for the Insane at Concord, NH, in 1870, and his wife Jane went to live

with their daughter Sarah in Stow, ME. Four children, as follows:

(3.1) DAVID H. CHANDLER, son of Daniel & Jane, b. 25 Oct. 1835; d. 8 Dec

1881, in Julian, Centre County, PA; m., 17 Dec. 1865, in Williamsport,

PA, RACHEL STRATTON (b. 8 June 1842), dau. of Robert & Sarah Stratton.

Before his marriage David was a grain clerk in East Boston, then a clerk

at Prentiss & Brothers in Bangor, ME. After marriage he settled at

Beaver Mills, Centre County, PA, and resided there until 1877, when they

moved to Julian, PA, where they kept a hotel. Six children, as follows:

William W. Chandler (b. 22 Oct. 1866); Sadie S. Chandler (b. 8 Jan. 1870;

d. 31 Oct. 1882); Prentice Chandler (b. 18 Dec. 1873; d. 10 July 1875);

an infant (b. 10 March 1875; d. 12 April 1875); Walter P. Chandler (b. 22

Oct. 1876); and Lizzie Chandler (b. 21 Jan. 1879; d. 11 Oct. 1882).

(3.2) SARAH CHANDLER, dau. of Daniel & Jane, b. 1 May 1836; d. 25 Aug.

1901, in Conway, NH; m., 6 April 1855, PETER CHARLES (b. 5 Feb. 1819, in

Fryeburg, ME), son of Russell & Melinda (Ames) Charles (See family of

Solomon Charles).

(3.3) MARY W. CHANDLER, dau. of Daniel & Jane, b. 17 June 1837; d. 19

Jan. 1857 (Chandler Cem., N. Chatham).

(3.4) Rev. PERRY CHANDLER, son of Daniel & Jane, b. 7 June 1843; m., 24

July 1873, ABBIE S. FULLER, dau. of John J. Fuller of Augusta, ME. Perry

enlisted in the 1st District Columbia Cavalry, Jan. 1843; afterwards was

transferred to the 1st Maine Cavalry and was in all the engagements of

that regiment. After Gen. Lee's surrender he taught a free school in

Petersburg, VA, for eight weeks. He entered Wesleyan University at

Middletown, CT, in 1868 and graduated in 1872. He joined the NY East

Conference of the Methodist Church in the spring of 1872, and his first

appointment was at New Haven for two years; second was in Jerome. In

1875 he was transferred to the Maine Conference, where his appointments

included Fairfield; Gorham, NH; Skowhegan; Kittery; and North Conway and

Bartlett, NH. Children: Perry Fuller Chandler (b. 8 June 1874); Ralph

W. Chandler (b. 5 June 1876); and Webster Allen Chandler (b. 10 Dec.

1878).

(4) MOSES CHANDLER, son of Paul & Susan, b. 10 Oct. 1802, in Chatham; d.

29 July 1875; m., 28 March 1827, NANCY FARRINGTON SWAN (b. 11 July 1805),

dau. of Elijah & Eunice (Barton) Swan of Bethel & West Paris, ME. Moses

settled in Bethel, ME, in 1827. Eight children, as follows:

(4.1) SUSAN HARDY CHANDLER, dau. of Moses & Nancy, b. 1 Feb. 1828, in

Bethel, ME; m., 29 Dec. 1852, GEORGE T. FARRAR; resided in Roxbury, ME;

seven children.

(4.2) SARAH GRAHAM CHANDLER, dau. of Moses & Nancy, b. 1 Sept. 1829; m.,

4 Sept. 1857, AUGUSTUS WOODBURY STILES; resided in Fryeburg Academy

Grant, ME; five children.

(4.3) NANCY GRAHAM CHANDLER, dau. of Moses & Nancy, b. 1 Jan. 1832; d.

11 May 1834.

(4.4) MOSES RUSSELL CHANDLER, son of Moses & Nancy, b. 28 Dec. 1833; m.,

1 Jan. 1861, ALBINA CONNOR. Veteran of Civil War; resided in Gilead, ME;

two children.

(4.5) MARY ANN SWAN CHANDLER, dau. of Moses & Nancy, b. 17 March 1836;

m., 1 Jan. 1861, JOHN WINTHROP GRANT. Resided in Yarmouth, ME; six

children.

(4.6) BETSEY JANE CHANDLER, dau. of Moses & Nancy, b. 27 May 1838; m.,

27 May 1859, BENJAMIN BACON, 3rd. Resided in Paris, ME; three children.

16 Jan. 1866, MARY E. GOSS. A farmer on his father's homestead in

(4.8) MARCUS WIGHT CHANDLER, son of Moses & Nancy, b. 9 June 1845; m., 4

Apr. 1869, ELMA ABBY NEEDHAM. A station-master on the Grand Trunk

Railroad at West Paris, ME; two children.

(5) ABIEL CHANDLER, son of Paul & Susan, b. 14 Jan. 1805, in Chatham; d.

1871; m., 11 March 1827, HANNAH CHANDLER BARTLETT (b. 13 Oct. 1810; d.

Feb. 1871), dau. of Elijah & Nancy (Graham) Bartlett. Settled in Bethel,

ME, by 1827; a farmer; six children, as follows:

(5.1) ELIJAH CHANDLER, son of Abiel & Hannah, b. 14 Jan. 1830, in

Bethel, ME; d. 11 March 1867, in Bethel; re-buried at Mt. Auburn Cem.,

Cambridge, MA; m., 11 May 1856, AMANDA MALVINA HEDRICK of Boston, MA. He

was an express-man in Boston; no children.

(5.2) ABIEL CHANDLER, son of Abiel & Hannah, b. 6 April 1831; d. 24 Dec.

1832.

(5.4) ABIEL CHANDLER, son of Abiel & Hannah, b. 21 Sept. 1835; m., 1

July 1866, ELLEN MARIA BLAKE of Gilead, ME. Veteran of Civil War; a

farmer; resided on his father's homestead in Bethel, ME; apparently no

children.

(5.5) CAROLINE KIMBALL CHANDLER, dau. of Abiel & Hannah, b. 16 Nov.

1836; d. 16 Oct. 1880; m., 16 Nov. 1856, HIRAM HODSON. Resided in

Bethel, ME; no children.

(5.6) MARY ELIZA CHANDLER, dau. of Abiel & Hannah, b. 17 Dec. 1840; m.,

Nov. 1869, HORATIO R. GODWIN. Resided in Upton and Bethel, ME; two

children.

(6) JOHN CHANDLER, son of Paul & Susan, b. 11 March 1807, in Chatham; d.

12 Nov. 1892; buried with wife at Riverside Cem., No. Fryeburg, ME; m., 2

Dec. 1834, BETSY FIFE (b. 10 Feb. 1812, in Pembroke, NH; d. 17 Feb. 1884,

in Stow, ME), dau. of Moses & Betsy (Noyes) Fife (See family of Moses

Fife). A farmer; residing in Chatham, 1840; settled in Stow, ME, by

1850; six children, as follows:

(6.1) SOPHRONIA W. CHANDLER, dau. of John & Betsy, b. 10 Feb. 1837, in

Chatham; m., May 1867, HANNIBAL D. GROVER of Bethel, ME. Sophronia was a

school teacher at Bethel and at Sudbury, MA.

(6.2) WILLIAM PERRY CHANDLER, son of John & Betsy, b. 20 May 1839; m.,

June 1869, ADALINE PARKER (b. Oct. 1847, in Stow, ME), dau. of Joseph Jr.

& Harriet Parker. William was a veteran of the Civil War (Co. G, 10th

Maine Regiment, and 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry); settled in Lynn, MA,

where he was a house painter in 1883. Four children: John Herbert

Chandler (b. 18 Aug. 1873); Wilber Chandler (b. 21 June 1877); Ortho

Grover Chandler (b. 19 Nov. 1879); and Bertha May Chandler (b. 26 Sept.

1881).

(6.3) JAY CHANDLER, son of John & Betsy, b. 4 Nov. 1841, in Chatham; d.

23 Feb 1923; buried with wife at Riverside cem., No. Fryeburg, ME; m., 25

May 1884, in Chatham, LILLIAN M. THURSTON (b. 12 Dec. 1865, in

Brownfield, ME; d. 2 Nov. 1920), dau. of Ansel & Mary E. (Adjutant)

Thurston. Veteran of the Civil War (2nd Massachusetts Cavalry); a farmer

and carpenter; resided in Stow and No. Fryeburg, ME; six children, as

follows:

(6.3.1) ZACH WILSON CHANDLER, son of Jay & Lillian, b. 20 Aug. 1885; d.

13 July 1966; buried with wife at Riverside Cem., N. Fryeburg, ME; m., 2

(6.3.2) JOHN J. CHANDLER, son of Jay & Lillian, b. 20 Dec. 1887; d. 16

Dec. 1956; buried at Riverside Cem., N. Fryeburg, ME. Ran a general

store at North Fryeburg for many years; resided with brother Zach; never

married.

(6.3.3) AGNES M. CHANDLER, dau. of Jay & Lillian and twin of Arta, b. 23

Feb. 1891; d. 22 March 1960; buried in John Chandler lot at Riverside

Cem., N. Fryeburg; m., as his second wife, CHARLES P. SMITH (1880-1946),

son of Silas A. & Elizabeth M. (Pitman) Smith of Fryeburg, ME; resided at

North Fryeburg; apparently no children.

(6.3.4) ARTA CHANDLER, dau. of Jay & Lillian and twin of Agnes, b. 23

Feb. 1891; d. 10 March 1891; buried at Riverside Cem., N. Fryeburg.

Lillian, b. and d. 21 Jan. 1896; buried at Riverside Cem., N. Fryeburg,

(6.4) EMMA CHANDLER, dau. of John & Betsy, b. 5 Dec. 1843; d. 18 Feb.

1932, in Norway, ME; buried with husband at Elmvale Cem., So. Waterford,

ME; m., 22 Jan. 1862, in Stow, ME, MOSES WILSON ABBOTT (b. 17 Jan. 1841,

in Stow, ME; d. 22 may 1917, in Waterford, ME), son of Moses & Hannah

Abbott of Stow. (See family of Simeon Abbott at

Stow, then before 1900 in Waterford. One child: Liston Everett Abbott

Sept. 1886, at E. Baldwin, ME; buried with wife at Hillcrest Cem., Stow,

ME; m., 13 Dec. 1879, JOSEPHINE MARTHA FARRINGTON (b. March 1859; d. 7

June 1883), dau. of Samuel & Mary E. Farrington of Stow. (See family of

an engineer, residing in Portland, ME, in 1883. Apparently no children.

(6.6) ELEANOR (or ELLEN) O. CHANDLER, dau. of John & Betsy, b. 23 Dec.

1851, in Stow, ME; d. 19 Feb. 1930, in Norway, ME; probably buried at

Norway Pine Grove Cem, So. Paris, ME; m. WHITNEY BUCK of Buckfield, ME

(b. about 1841; d. 20 July 1904). Eleanor was residing in Norway, ME, in

1920. Children: Arthur C. Buck (1885-1961; m., 21 June 1911, Harriet V.

_____); Clarence W. Buck (1887-1955; m.1st, 10 July 1927, Harriet S.

French; m.2nd, Mrs. Marion Andrews Whitman); and Florence E. Buck (b.

about 1892).

(7) SUSAN HARDY CHANDLER, dau. of Paul & Susan, b. 19 April 1809, in

Chatham; d. 19 Feb. 1887, in Stow, ME; buried with husband at Hillcrest

Cem., Stow; m., 29 Dec. 1825, HENRY S. FARRINGTON (b. 8 Nov. 1803; d. 30

June 1878). Resided in Stow, ME; eight children. (See further under

(8) STEPHEN CHANDLER, son of Paul & Susan, b. 27 Dec. 1810; d. 8 Sept.

1829; unmarried; a farmer in Aroostook County, ME.

(9) OLIVER PERRY CHANDLER, son of Paul & Susan, b. 30 Oct. 1813; d. 8

Dec. 1837; m., 1837, EUNICE SANBORN (b. about 1822). Eunice m(2), 9

March 1840, Paul Chandler Leavitt, son of John & Dorcas (Chandler)

Leavitt, nephew of her first husband (See family of John Leavitt).

Oliver and Eunice had one child, as follows:

in Chatham; d. 31 Dec. 1924, in Conway, NH; m., 24 Feb. 1856, in Chatham,

ALFRED ABBOTT EASTMAN (b. 26 Feb. 1835, in Stow, ME; d. 24 July 1890, in

Conway, NH), son of Moses K. & Abigail (Dresser) Eastman. She was

residing in Kearsage (Conway), NH, in 1901. Eleven children. (See
