The Icon
~  i have come to love ~
traditionally, when people call so and so their good friends, we conjure up images of the person physically hanging out with a friend, picking up the phone to call someone they trust and disclose their struggles, exchanging gifts and cards of kindness and encouragement, meeting up in a cafe or pub, cracking inside jokes on a dinner table when no one else can understand them ... But maybe the concept of friendship has changed.  it has broadened its dimension.  it has started to even include this icon in some ways, at least in my own friendships.
when we hear about "Post-modernism" we hear "hi-touch" is taking the place of "hi-tech" -- that technology is no longer merely used for scientific progression or information exchange, but it is also for interpersonal relationship and connection to form.
i have come to like this Message icon on ICQ so much.  i don't realize how much this icon means to me.  the picture of this icon looks cute.  it looks nice as if there is even more aesthetic value to it.  i wonder why.
functionally, it blinks for a couple seconds before i click on it so that an "ICQ message" overrides my full attention.  i just move on, i forget about the blinking message icon and read the "message" - the real thing!
...  sometimes i type a message to a friend telling of my stress, complaining of my tiredness from work.  When it blinks back on my interface, i cannot wait double-clicking on it to see what my friends had to say to me.

... or when i simply sit back and relax, chatting with someone about their life stories, i can't wait to double click on the blinking message icon just to see what the next scene of their story is, hoping to catch up to their next thought.
i used to often wonder why people keep their ICQ online for so long, even 24/7 without really using it.  they could leave it on N/A or AWAY mode for ever ... as long as their computer is switched on.  i wonder why.

then lately, it has also become my practice too to leave ICQ on for a long time even when i am not messaging anyone. -- that's just like hanging out with someone not over a beer, but an Instant Messaging Interface.
What have these icons come to mean for me?

What they come to mean for you?
