In the Old Testament are those books of the Bible that were written prior to the time of Christ. It pertains to the Old Covenants and is divided into forty-five books. It includes twenty one Historical Books; seven Doctrine books, that include prayers and holy counsels; and seventeen Prophetic books. It is a history of God’s dealings with his people in the plan of salvation and their response to Him.

Many great men came after the time of Abraham and are considered Old Testament Saints. Anyone who shared in the Covenant of Israel with God, and who was faithful to such a commitment can be considered a Saint of the Old Covenant. The Prophets were outstanding people who had a special mission from God to the people of Israel but even these are considered Saints only in relation to their devotion to the Covenant.

In the book of Psalms there are one hundred and fifty Psalms. There are three types of Psalms: hymns praising God, prayers begging for help, and songs of thanksgiving. The book of Psalms has many authors and was written over a long period of time.

The Church uses the Psalms in her daily liturgy. The whole one hundred and fifty Psalms are in the priest’s daily prayer book and segments of the Psalms are used daily in the Mass.

The “New Testament” is that part of the Bible written after the time of Christ. The “New Testament” refers to the New Covenant Christ came to establish with men and women. Its twenty-seven books are divided into four Gospels, the Epistles, the Acts of the Apostles and the book of Revelation. They explain this New Covenant which Christ established. We believe the writers were inspired by the Holy Spirit to convey, to all, these truths that God wanted us to live by. The inspired writers were Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Peter, James and Jude.
