The SnowBall Classic 2002

By Artur Lavine. The SnowBall Classic 2002 took place in Westin Bayshore hotel, Vancouver, Canada.
I think it was a great success, there were competitors who traveled from many different foreign places.
It was very impressing to see the amazing performance made by these incredible performers. From my perspective it was an intruding show that has improved dramatically. Especially the shows that were performed by serious competitive couples, such as Franco Formica with Oksana Nikiforova, and Matej Krascer with Janja Lesar. I also enjoyed the young competitors that danced in the Sunday congress. Actually I was one of the competitors in the under 21 PreChampionship Latin.

 Joel Marasigan & Clara Shih

My partner's name is Olga Divakova, who is fifteen years old, only a year younger than I. We ended up placing fourth in our category. We have been dancing together for less than six months. Our partnership began with both of our levels in the Gold Star category. It was only after the Grand Ballroom competition that we have been ready to move on to the next category. So now we're practicing five nights a week on average and just can't wait until the next competition known as the UBC Gala Ball, which also takes place in Vancouver, BC.

Island Fantasy Ball, May 5, 2001 Nanaimo, BC

This year we had a very interesting Island Fantasy Ball. Like always, the atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. Outside it was possible to feel the breeze from the ocean. Although Nanaimo is a small town there are many activities and attractions to visit. There are many forests and nature site just waiting to be discovered. In the morning we witnessed some young talents. It's great that the kids start dancing at such a young age. About five or six years ago there weren't any juvenile dancers with this high of a level. Let's also not forget our two fabulous Junior couples in Championship Category: Yaroslav Yasel & Ekaterina Vagner, Vadim Garbuzov & Maria Yasel! The thing that kept the audience going was the show by VADIM and ANGELA MOSTOVOY.

 Vadim and Angela Mostovoy

They started off with their five dance standard show, which included different costumes for every dance. After that we witnessed a battle in Adult age group Championship Category (BC Closed) between the current BC Champions and an others couples. Katie Virshilas and Jason Tabachnicov regained their title in Latin. Joel Marasigan and Clara Shih won the Amateur Standard title. Congratulations from Dance Way Team!

The evening was concluded by an interesting Latin five-dance show by the same performers VADIM and ANGELA MOSTOVOY. In conclusion www.danceway.com wants to thank all the organizers of the Island Fantasy Ball for creating a great competition with such a warm welcoming and calming atmosphere!

Canadian Closed Amateur Championships 2001

Undoubtedly these were one of the best Canadian Closed Championships ever. Everything was extremely clean and beautiful at the International Plaza Hotel. The juniors were great this year. Probably it was the first time that a BC couple won the Junior Championship Standard category. This obviously means that the standard of dancing in BC is constantly rising. Congratulation to Yaroslav Yasel & Ekaterina Vagner from British Columbia coached by Victor Yasel - 2001 Canadian Closed Junior Standard Champions! This proves that persistency is very important! Congratulations to the all BC representatives who participated in these Championships.

URSKA OPEN 2001 or 20-day trip to Europe

The first place we went to during our trip was Amsterdam. The city is ancient and has lots of rivers and water around it. It had a lot of small cars; barely any of them were American. To buy an apartment sweet in the center of Amsterdam it could cost up to five million dollars. Most of the day we were practicing in the dance school and taking lessons from various instructors. It has a lot of pubs. Then we went to Vienna is Austria. Vienna is a very enchanting city. It is very architectural and it barely has any modern buildings. We visited the palaces and the museums. Especially I liked the museum of war, which had the original Armour of all the famous kings and princes. I touched them even though the alarm went off. The museum of music was also quite nice. The best thing about Vienna was the humungous gothic church, which looked frightening at night.

 Vadim Garbuzov and Maria Yasel

This trip wasn't as good as the previous one to Vienna we had in November. The November one was awesome because we got to see all the Christmas decorations. They say that the best Christmas you can have would be in Vienna. In Vienna we had less lessons than in Amsterdam so we had more time to explore. There we rented a car and drove to Udine in Italy. Since Udine was a little village there was nothing to see but grape vines and clean Italian villas. The dance teacher there was quite strict and organized. There was only one bad thing that happened to us there. While we were dancing someone broke the window of our car. Good thing it was warm in Italy, otherwise we would of frozen. Since we couldn't find any car repair shops the only thing we could do was to tape some see-through material to the hole.

In the morning we drove to Ljubljana in Slovenia hurrying not to be late for the competition. We got there on time and got 4th place in Standard and 2nd in Latin. It wasn't a disappointing result. We stayed in Ljubljana for one week since there was a dance camp. We learned a lot.

Austrian Open 2000

The Austrian Open 2000 was an exciting competition. Once our team from Canada stepped into the famous Wiener Stadthalle right away we could feel the powerful atmosphere. About 2000 athletes (top IDSF-couples) from nearly 40 nations come every year to this famous competition in Vienna. In addition there is the traditional Viennese Waltz Championship (this year the 34th time). 16 competitions took place on three days from November 17th to 19th 2000. Everyone is so eager to win although they know that there is only one winner. You must give it your best since you've only got one chance.

 Yaroslav Yasel & Sara Liang

Sure, the strong, famous and confident couples can save their power for the final while the weaker less experienced dancers have to give 120% from the first round. The ones who don't make it to the next round just have to train harder. First step on the path of success: November 17th 2000 Yaroslav Yasel and Sara Liang qualified for the 3rd out of 5 rounds in the Junior 6 dance. November 18th 2000 Vadim Garbuzov and Maria Yasel made it to the quarterfinal consisting 24 of the worlds top couples in Junior I Latin.

There was no wasting time, everything was very dynamic. While we competed hard in the smaller hall, across from us in the bigger hall formation teams from around the world including the UBC Formation team were getting ready for their big competition. Me and the rest of the Canadians learned a lot. It was a good chance for Victor Yasel our coach to practice his German. I witnessed boys doing the splits so frequently that it gave me a feeling that if I don't include and do the splits in my routine I will be considered unfashionable. Now I know that having a beautiful routine is very important.    Article written by Vadim Garbuzov.   Back
