Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero
Type 32 "Houkoku"

There is nothing to say about this aircraft that has not already been said so I’ll confine my comments to the Type32 model. There were only 343 Type32s built.

Changes from earlier models included: Removal of the folding wing-tips to improve maneuverability and save weight. Installation of a Sakae 21 1,113hp engine with a two-speed supercharger and Hamilton Standard propeller. The new engine resulted in slightly more fuel usage at cruise, but considerably more at combat settings than the earlier Sakae 12. The clipped wings allowed only a slight increase in speed at the expense of climb rate and turning radius. In early 1942, it was decided to discontinue this model.

My Zero model is the Hasegawa Zero Type32 “Houkoku” (JT121). As with most of this company's products, it practically fell together. Moulding was nice and crisp with engraved panel lines. The cockpit is just beautiful with raised detail and the engine was very well done. The canopy is very clean and is molded in three pieces and combined with the cockpit just begs to be left open, although it is so clear, the detail is easily seen when closed.

The only problem I had was whether to include the radio antennae (part E19). The instructions show it’s installation, but the box art and the painting and decal placement sheet omit it. I only had one Type32 reference photo and it showed it, so I included it as well.

The decals were ok, but that’s about it. Markings are included for 3 aircraft. All are in overall IJN grey with (what I have always thought of anyway) dark green/black cowling. Two aircraft are from the 2nd Flying Group and the third from the Tainan Flying Group. All in all, I highly recommend this kit.
