PRETTY BABIES
(PG)

~*~

Chakotay awakened and raised up on one elbow finding himself alone in bed and the cradle nearby empty. Within a week of becoming a father his internal clock had adjusted to the night feeding schedule and though Kathryn took the baby into the lounge to avoid waking him, he often woke up at the usual times.

From the next room drifted Kathryn's soft voice though he could not make out the words. Quietly he got out of bed and peeked into the lounge to see Kathryn in the usual spot on the sofa under the viewport. Even after four weeks this scene made his heart swell with pride and joy. His wife in silhouette against the stars with their little Olivia cradled to her breast, speaking softly to her. Crossing his arms he leaned against the doorway concealed in darkness and drank it in.

"Daddy needs his sleep so we must be very quiet, Angel. He's working extra hard so Mommy can spend more time with you." Kathryn brought a tiny fist to her lips for a kiss then went on. "You have the most wonderful Daddy, did you know that? I picked him special, you know. The first time I saw him I knew he'd make beautiful babies, and I was right. Just look at you! The prettiest baby in the galaxy!"

Chakotay smiled and shook his head.

"Daddy loves you so much and he's so proud of you." She smiled down into the piercing blue-black eyes. "I've never seen his eyes light up the way they did when he saw you for the first time. And I don't think that grin has left his face since that day."

Chakotay crossed the room to his girls and sat down beside them, resting an arm on the back of the sofa behind Kathryn. After a gentle kiss for his wife he turned his attention to Olivia, caressing her head. "How long before we can start another one?" he teased. Looking up at Kathryn he chuckled at the look on her face.

"What? You're tired of this one already?"

"Not on your life," he answered, leaning down to kiss Olivia's forehead. "But I just thought...since I make such beautiful babies..."

"Oh, you heard that, huh?" Kathryn said with a crooked smile. "It's true. But until you can make them all by yourself, I suggest you just enjoy this one."

"Agreed," he grinned then leaned in to kiss her. As if suddenly aware she was no longer the center of attention, Olivia wriggled and gave a tiny grunt. The kiss broken, they smiled down at her.

"Well, pardon me, Little Lady, but I had him first." Kathryn looked up at Chakotay. "She's going to be demanding."

"Just like her mommy."

Kathryn rolled her eyes, kissed his cheek then rested her temple against his jaw as they gazed down at their perfect little creation.
