It's no mystery that Göran Edman has been one of my favorite vocalists for years now.  From his days in Madison to singing for John Norum in the late 80s then Yngwie for the early 90s, then the slew of bands that came after the time in Malmsteen's band, including AOR act Street Talk, Scandanvian hard rockers Glory, and most recently the Queen influenced Kharma... Edman has consistantly delivered each performance with all his heart and soul.  Here we take a brush with his past and a glimpse at the future with the premier hired gun in metal and hard rock.

Questions by Alanna Evans & Andy Craven

1. Will there be another album from the Johansson line up that cut 'The Last Viking'?
There is no indication in that direction at the moment.

2. What is the Malmsteen track you are most proud of?
I don't feel proud about anything that has to do with my two albums with Yngwie Malmsteen. In the matter of fact I can't listen toGoran Edman these albums today. It is something I have left behind me.

3. What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment thus far?
I think the two last Glory albums was OK " Crisis vs. Crisis" and "Wintergreen". Kharma's " Wonderland" was also a good , well manufactured production.

4. If you could have done anything in your career differently, what would it be and how would you change it?
There is no point in speculating . I rather look forward.

5. What do you think are the best vocalists in the business right now?
To be honest . I have no clue. Each voice has its own charm. I have always had a fondness for blues and soul influenced colours when it comes to the timbre of a voice contrary more expressive sounding voices with a more personal individuality. Paul Rogers- Stevie Wonder-Tom Waits. Chris Cornell could also be mentioned as a more up to date vocalist. Today most artists are so "manicured" by producers so it is difficult to make any judgement about there "real" talent. They don't do it on stage anymore if you see what I mean.

6. Any projects you have lined up for the future?
It is to early to leave out any details about the future. The "Nostradamus" project with Nick Kotzev ( Brazen Abbot) is going to be released in April I presume. I'm performing 5 tracks amongst other artists on the album.

7. Can you give us some details on your work on the upcoming Reingold album?
Jonas is recording a new " Midnight sun " album at the moment. The next Reingold album will be more progressive and less metal. More songs have to be written and the lineup is still not decided.

8. Are there any plans for a follow up to the Kharma "Wonderland" disc?
It is all up to our X- record company MTM Music, if they will drop their option right or not. They holds the faith of Kharma in their hands.

9. You have stated in the past that Kharma may be the first band you really felt a part of, can you tell us how the band got started, and how this relationship with the band came to be?
Dragan , Atilla , Imre and Joel are old friends of mine from the good old days backin the 80s when I used to live in Gothenburgh. I helped several bands with demos during that time I remeber, and one band was called Vanessa. Vanessa contained the embryo of later Kharma and when the offer from MTM came up a few years ago we decided to give it a try just for fun.

10. Any amusing stories you could share about things that might have happened in the studio or onstage?
It became 100% of work and frustration in the studio and so far Kharma had not advanced to become a live band on stage.

11. How do you find the inspiration to have this ability to sing convincingly any type of song, even if the style isn't quite your cup of tea?
It's a job. I regard myself more a studio musician in the first place. It is like in most handicrafts. You do the job properly to satisfy the customer . I have a large input in most projects I decide to participate in, because of my creative abilities and dedication.

12. Did you ever sing a song that you detested, any song that you particularly love to sing?
A lot of the songs from the two" Glory" albums mentioned earlier are very personal to me when I also participated in writing the music for a change, together with Jan Granwick. Detest ore rather rewrite , arrange differently is a normal procedure before you start the actual recordings.

13. What was your greatest vocal challenge?
Yngwie Malmsteen was difficult to sing live when the range was on the top of my ability. Every gig felt like a workout.

Goran Edman with Kharma14. What is the story behind the lyrics to "Vodka and Ice" that you did with Glory?
It's ironic. At the moment I was fighting with Yngwie about my publishing money( how unusual) It's a song about my feelings for Yngwie at the time.

15. Any particular song you would like to cover?
Can't think of any. I don't like to do covers and if I do it has to be arranged in a personal way differently.

16. Finally, any parting comments?
I don't like the philosophy of Napster. If you like variety and not only wants to listen at Britney Spears. Support your favorite artists ore bands by buying their albums ore songs instead of downloading them for free.
