Stanwyck only film in 1952  was based on a Clifford Odets play, shot   in Monterey and was the story of a restless woman who returns to her hometown where she marries a simple fisherman (Douglas) for security. Her restlessness leads her to adultery with a cynical movie projectionist,(Ryan) and the result is violence and a wrecked home until she realizes she loves Douglas and goes back to him and their child.
The role won Barbara a Laurel Award from the Motion Picture Exhibitors.
Robert Taylor had left  for four months in 1949 to make a film in England with Elizabeth Taylors (and rumors  of an affair between the two Taylors had surfaced) after he returned home things seemed to go for the better between him and Barbara. Then in May 1950 taylor left for Rome, to star in MGM epic "Quo Vadis"   In Rome, during the longperiod of filming, the actor name had been linked to those of several Italians beauties. Barbara had taken an European vacation and visited him on the set, but things had not gone too well. Robert returned home in November and he and Barbara spent a few days in Palm Spring and then in San Francisco, where he underwent abdominal surgery for a double ernia, and then returned home for  a convalescence.   On December 5, Hollywood was stunned when Barbara and Bob issued a joint statement announcing their intention to seek a divorce. Papers were filed in court on January 31, 1951  and the trial  was set for February 21.  The two remained in good terms and were often seen together until in May of 1954, Robert Taylor married actress Ursula Thiess.
The only problem on the set was  Marilyn Monroe, playing one of her first important roles. During a scene where Stanwyck had to hang clothes on a line while talking to Monroe, the latter blew her lines twenty-six times, makin it very hard on her costar. But Stanwyck staid calm and never had a bad word for Marilyn.  Stanwyck said later that Monroe was awkward, undisciplined, often late and drove everybody crazy, but did it without malice, she was just a carefree kid. When asked what she thought about Monroe  as an actress, Stanwyck simply smiled and quipped, "With a figure like that, you don't have to act!"
A mystery in which Stanwyck played a scheming housekeeper trying to do Louis Calhern in for his money, complete with period gowns and black wig is , in the words of one of the actors:" a pretentious piece of merde"
The film was not up to the standard of most of Standwyck's previous film, but she was as usual a complete pro.
