Zurek was born in communist-ruled Poland, in the southern town of Zakopane. In 1981, her mountaineer father convinced the Polish government to allow him to go on an expedition to Mount McKinley in Alaska. Kris Zurek, however, traveled to Canada, where he began a new life while he waited for the rest of his family to receive exit visas. Four years later, Natasza, her younger sister and their mother were permitted to join Kris in Vancouver.
