The U.S. Marine Detachment, Washington Navy Yard (1859-1865), is a permanent, non-profit, educational organization whose purpose is to educate the general public about the service of the U.S. Marines during the American Civil War. Members of the United States Volunteers, the Marine Detachment portrays U.S. Marines as members of landing parties, "Naval Brigades," Marines afloat, and Marine units serving with the Army. The Marine Detachment not only portrays U.S. Marines as they appeared in battle, but also as they appeared in garrison and as members of ships' crews. The uniforms worn are reproductions which have been patterned as closely as possible to the originals.

This recreated Marine Detachment also faces another task. Existing diaries and letters describe the superb military bearing of the U.S. Marines. Whether aboard ship, in garrison, or on land, Marine units were constantly complemented on their drill and military deportment. Only by appearing, drilling, and performing as the originals, could this recreated Marine Detachment represent the U.S. Marines from the Civil War era without dishonoring their memory.

After becoming a member, the recruit is given up to two years to assemble his uniforms and equipment. All members must maintain a very high degree of appearance and attitude. If you are interested in joining, or receiving further information about this organization, please contact: James Morrow by using the email link below.
