Blue Sheedy

Blue Sheedy, the fastest dog I've ever put a collar on, she was born on our bedroom floor early in the morning on November the 7th 1993, the second of 8 puppies.

A blue brindle and white bitch my oldest daughter named her Carol after herself. Carol of course lived in our house from the day she was born slept on our bed with the cat. The other puppies we sold except a brindle bitch called Pam who no one seemed to want, we kept her as a playmate for Carol to grow up with.

Carol showed an instinct to chase as a puppy when the kids played puppy races with them draging a little stuffed toy rabbit on a rope around the yard. Carol was always the first pup in the race and managed to grab the rabbit before they could get it away. She learned quickly and I had her broken to the boxes by the time she was 10 mths old. Unfortunately she fractured a hock in a paddock accident not long after that and had to be spelled.

When she finally got to the trials she was about 18 mths old it took a few trials to educate her to run with other dogs I didn't want to start her before she was experienced enough. After she had only trialed twice a friend told me she would never be any good if she couldn't win a trial after her second attempt put her down I was only wasting my money, they were wasting their breath. I knew what she could do and knew all she lacked was experience.

After her second race start she ran a second in Toowoomba. I took her up and private trialed her the following Monday she stopped the clock for the 457m distance in 25.98 secs. A top time for a green dog. On the Friday I started her again knowing what she could do, she left the boxes 2 lengths in front of the field to lead all the way for a win.

Blue Sheedy raced against some the best of her time but due to her bad hock being on the inside leg she would run wide on corners allowing the other dogs to get up the inside.

She fractured her hind leg in a race a couple starts after her win when another dog, a mad keen railer, jumped from the outside box and went straight to the rails taking every other dog on the inside with it. Again she had to be spelled this time for 18 mths. I tried to bring her back after this and got her as far as the trials where she was running blistering times. Then she pulled a toe trialling at Postman's Ridge trial track when she ran one of the fastest times ever seen at the track with one front toe hanging half off.

She never raced again after this and was retired.

We took her lure coursing after her toe healed in her first attempt at this she won champion lure courser for the Warwick district. We formed the Warwick Lure Coursing Club with the help of a few other interested friend's but after not seeing eye to eye with some of the other members we left the club in it's second year.

My daughter got herself a show Whippet this meant we had to go around the dog shows. I decided to take Blue Sheedy as well to see how she would go. She won 1st and best of breed in nearly every show she attended only being beaten twice. She was only 4 wins off being awarded the title of Champion by the CCC when she got out of the yard and was hit by a car crippling her for life.

I still have Carol she is still our much loved family pet although she spends most of her time now sleeping on the couch as she can't get around like she use to due to the injurys she received in the accident the person who hit her didn't even offer to take her to the vet.

She is happy in her retired life as a 40 mile per hour couch potato she slept in the house from the day she was born so I sopose she was born to be just that. But I did prove no matter how much you spoil a greyhound it doesn't stop them from being able to race come home and sleep on the foot of your bed with the cat.

I would recommend a greyhound to anyone looking for a dog for a pet, they are loving, faithful, and caring kind dogs with a nature more human than any other breed I have had anything to do with.
