THE
VILLAGE
Clayton
West is ten miles from Huddersfield, nine miles from Wakefield and
eight miles from Barnsley. It is in a rural setting and has become a
'dormitory' village as most of its inhabitants work in nearby towns.
There is some light industry housed in small industrial units as well
as farming.
THE
CHURCH BUILDING
An
Independent chapel was opened on the site in 1794 but in 1859 the
building was felt to be too cold and damp. It was demolished in 1864
and a new building was erected on the same site and was opened in
1866. This building is still in use today.
CHURCH
ACTIVITIES
The
congregation meets for worship every Sunday at 3.00pm
There are regular coffee mornings and other social/fund raising
events throughout the year.
A very well attended Mens' Society meets twelve times a year between
September and April.
ECUMENICAL
SCENE
There
are two other denominations represented in the village, Anglican and Methodist.
The
church is part of the Churches Together in Scissett and Clayton West
with High Hoyland (a nice 'snappy' title!).
Churches
Together is an active body of enthusiastic people and arranges a
holiday club for 5 - 10 year olds, joint worship/discussion groups
during Lent and Monthly services in three local care homes.
United
services are held on the four occasions during the year when there
is a fifth Sunday in the month.
For
further information please contact the Secretary or Minister.
