   BRIEF  HISTORY OF CARD MAKING

Card making can be traced back to the Ancient Chinese, who would send out greetings of good will to celebrate the New Year. The Egyptians also used papyrus scrolls for their greetings.

In  Europe in the early 1400s, handmade paper greetings cards were being exchanged And it is thought that this was the time that Valentine cards came into existence, although in the Middle Ages Valentine's were either said or sang to their lover.

The trend continued, and  before to long  the sending of Christmas Cards began. It was in 1843 that Sir Henry Cole hired the artist John Calcott Horsley to design a card that he could send to his friends and acquaintances.

By the 1850s, the greeting card was transformed from a relatively expensive, handmade and hand-delivered gift to a more popular and easy way of communication, which was largely due to the advances in printing and mechanization.

By the 1930's developments like colour lithography propelled the manufactured greeting card industry forward. By the 1980's there was an upward turn as more & more  consumers looked for greeting cards that were different from the standard offering.

In today's world of card making there are so many new things that are available and new things are being brought out all the time to make card making easier for people to make their own cards in their own homes by using various techniques i:e rubber stamping, decoupage, tea bag folding, iris folding, quilling, dry embossing, paper pricking, stitching on cards and so the list goes on, I am sure that a lot of the techniques that are used today can be dated back to the early 1800's. It is really nice that a lot of the crafts of yesteryear are being brought up to date and are being used in many types of card making.
