Did You Know?

Having your desktop fixed in the above way gives you other advantages. The icons are actually quicker to get to if you have a window open, like Microsoft Word, you can go to the desktop toolbar and click to bring up 'My Computer', which now has a popout arrow, that leads to your drive: A:, C:, and M:(CD drive), and to the Printer, Control Panel, etc..   Each of these in turn have popouts, therefore, no matter what window your working in you can have access to the other drives without going to Start and opening another window, or to Windows Explorer.

Each folder that has it's own popout, will allow you to go on to the point where you can right click to open, cut, copy, delete, ect., without actually bring up another window.  And of course, you can have more short cuts on your desktop without all the clutter.

I have like-kind folders grouped into their own brief cases (i.e. My Brief Case renamed), for quick access no matter what else I may be working on. For example, when I'm on the Internet downloading a long file, I can go to my Games brief case, to bring up Solitaire to play, while I wait. Note:When the file is done it will popup in front of the game window, so you can then continue with it.

It is beneficial to me, as a writer, to have my research, and the projects that I'm working on in different brief cases, for easy access.   Of course, I always backup my work on floppy disks, I had too many lost files in the beginning to risk the lost time now.

If your someone that does much work on your computer, no matter what make or model it is, one of the most important things to master is working with the files themselves.  I will go over some of my techniques in the next update, plus more of what I've discovered in working with this wonder called computer. arrow leading back to home page Back home

Free For The Taking

There are a multitude of other free offerings on the internet, here are only a few off the ones that I have taken advantage of.

WordWeb is a powerful free English thesaurus and dictionary.   You can download a free version of WordWeb to try out.  I have it on my desktop for easy access when I'm working on my website, and it was placed on my MS Word window automatically.   Features include: Definitions and synonyms, Proper nouns, Related words, 120,000 root words, 100,000 synonym sets, Link up to MS Word.   This neat little tool is also the fastest way to check a word when write e-mail.

Yahoo Player and Real Player are both free, they are both similar, but some site use one, or the other, to pass their information on to you.    Yahoo! Player makes it easy to find and play, or download, the best music, and radio stations, available on the Internet.   With Real Player 8 Basic you can listen to hundreds of radio stations, world-wide, watch music videos, and download free music.   There other free players out there, but I haven't checked them out yet.

One of my other favorite freebees is Weather Bug, when you fill-in your info before downloading, the Weather Bug locks into your home location and each time you bring it up, your live-weather conditions are on the screen.   Radar, either local, or anywhere in the US is availible in seconds.   Plus, while on line, the temperature for your area is posted on the taskbar, and if there is a weather alert, the degrees icon blinks to let you know.   In addition, the Instacam and weather trivia are lots of fun, plus an array of other goodies come on the bug.

These are just a few of the many free things available on the internet, I hope to bring more on the next update. arrow leading back to home page Back home
