This website is dedicated to that end.I have kept a journal and written stories all my life, but I did not get my computer until 1997. Previously, I had used the computer in the workplace for data entry only.  It now replaced my old typewriter and opened up a whole new world of discovery.

Soon I became adequate with the word processor and improved a life-long deficiency in spelling by a 100%.  Still, that can't hold a candle to my discoveries through researching my writing, or just surfing the web for fun.  And, is you'll stay with me for a few minutes, whether you're new or an old hand at writing, computing, or the Internet, you just might find something of interest in these pages.  Even my twenty-three-year-old Saga gamer finds it hard to keep up with me these days.

To make that point more understandable, I have built this website by researching the Internet, downloading some free software and a ebook, or two, and investing in one of the cheaper webpage building kits (which this untrained mind had to research just to understand).

It's taken me a while, and I'm sure I could have managed it sooner, if I hadn't been so hard to please.  Don't get me wrong, there are a multitude of good looking sites out there, some done in minutes by amateurs and others taking a good while by pros.  Still, I'm set in my ways and wanted these pages to reflect me and, as time goes by, I'm sure, with a lot more help, I'll get there.  In the mean time, there might be just one person out there that can learn something from this site, then again, with feedback from others, I will gain new and fascinating knowledge about this high-tech world of ours.  As I learn, I hope to update this site and pass it on.

Some things to keep in mind as you read on, I have a Hewlett Packard Pavilion computer and run Windows 98.  I have Microsoft Office 97 installed, and have a 56K internal modem to connect to my internet service provider through my regular phone service.  All these things, and many more, make a difference in how your computer functions, so check your system's manual and softwares' help files before making any changes that might through a monkeywrench into things.  I am not in any way an expert, these are just some things that I've learned that works for me.

Did You Know?

If you are sound sensitive, like I am, you can go to settings --> control panel --> sound --> schemes drop-down list, and pick no sounds and you won't get all those annoying clunks and dings.  You can also disable some of your AOL sounds in the same way, just srow down the sound window, click on the item you want to silence and in the name drop-down list, click none.  This works with Windows 98.  By the way, if your modem makes that ear-piercing noise when it dials onto AOL, you get rid of that of that sound as well, find out how.  Plus some more 'did you knows' that you don't normally know without stumbling on to them by accident.

If your modem makes that ear-piercing noise when it dials onto AOL, you can get rid of that sound as well. On your starting AOL window, click on setup -->expert setup-->Device(modems,etc.)-->edit, then at the modem drop-down list, highlight your modem brand. Then on the speaker volume drop-down list, select 'off' and click 'ok' and close setup. Now sign on to see if it worked. I got this info from TV, and after listening to that annoying sound for so long, it was heaven.

If the site of the icons on your desktop disrupt the theme or picture you may have installed, you can hide them, here's how. To view the screen as a web page, that is, nothing but the picture, right click on the desktop --> click on properties --> on the display properties window, click on the Web file tab, and click the box 'View my active desktop as a web page' --> click Apply and then OK. And the icons are gone, but don't panic, you don't have to do it all in reverse just to see the icons again. Go to your taskbar and right click on it then on the popup, go to toolbars and click on Desktop. The toolbar appears on your taskbar.  Now side that bar, by clicking on, and holding, its left end, to the right until you only see the'Desktop >>'. When you place your pointer on the '>>' and click, it pops up to revel all the icons on your desktop.

Why do this? There are several reasons that I have mine set up this way. One, if I have a audio CD playing, I don't want to turn off the monitor, or the CD would stop too, and with the desktop set this way I have a nice picture on the screen, instead of all those icons. Two, I have a picture from Webshots that I change almost every day (to see how you can get Webshots free click on the ad below. Three, I also hide my taskbar and have nothing but a nice picture on my screen while I work elsewhere in my office. If you do down load webshots, you can also introduce your own pictures into the program, it can be a lot of fun. Note: If you have a newer (1997>) monitor, the makers have eliminated the screen-burn that afflicted the older models, so I've learned from research, but check about your model to make sure. More

Free For The Taking

I'm sure by now you've found a lot of things on the internet to download free besides webshots.   There are the upgrade for programs like Internet Explorer and Netscape, but have you found the e-books readers yet.   They're great, and the ones I have found are free.   You can go to eBooks.com and download the Adobe eBook Reader, then download dozens of classics free, or newer books starting under five dollars.   Then there's Microsoft Reader; Acrobat eBook Reader; and netLibrary eBook Reader.

Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Preview Port all have some free ebooks for these readers.   You can download as many books as you like for each reader, they are compressed so they don't take-up much space.   So you are able to have a nice library and it doesn't need dusting. More

Continually learning, finding new things of interest, and filling any leisure time we might find among our many daily duties, is our aim in life.   These things keep use young, and active, though we might not get around as easily, life’s interest also keep us physically and mentally healthy.

I have found the computer, and the internet, a great tool in filling all of these goals in the later years of life.   There are unlimited sites on the internet to help us succeed in these endeavors, I have only a few listed on my links page, please visit it.   It is a work in progress, but I am attempting to give a description of each site listed, and to add to it frequently.

It is my hope that you find someplace new each day, and, of course, each of these sites in turn, link to more sites of like kind.   If you find sites that interest you please e-mail me so that I might investigate and list them as well.

If you have your own webpage, like this one, or a business page, that you are responsible for the upkeep of, you are a webmaster, there, you have a title that you may not have known about.

In designing and creating this page, I have search the web for information and free content.    Among my favorite sites are: EncycloZine; Webmaster’s Resource; Refdesk; and IPL Reference Center.   Each refers to other sites, to give you unlimited info and content for your site, most of which is free.   I have also downloaded several free software program to learn html, and javascript, from sites like ZDnet and Cnet.

It took me quite a while to grasp the concept of the symbols and layouts involved, but when I finally did, I went to town.   That is how this site came to be.

Each update, I plan to bring tips that I have discovered in that search that I hope to be of some use to the other beginners out there.   Keep in mind that I have only scratched the surface of information, and that, as I make new discoveries, they will be used to improve this site and the content therein.

Tip

Working with Tables, make design and layout simple, at least for the beginner.   This page is made up completely of tables, some with borders, some without.   Learn to use tables before attempting your design, it will cut down on the frustration.   There are usually table makers in the pagebuilders of your web host, if not, go to one of the above mentioned sites that have the html instructions and do the research, it’s not that hard.   If you have a problem, e-mail me, I will try to answer your question, or I will direct you to where I believe you can get further assistance.
