St. Thomas Episcopal Church is on the National Register of Historic Places under the auspices of the National Park Service, U.S. Governor Ford named it a Kentucky Historical Site.

The original Episcopal Mission in the Three Forks Area of the Kentucky River was St. Pauls Mission established in 1870 in Proctor -- just across the Kentucky River. The mission sponsored the first schools in the area, first with a grade school in 1882, and then a high school in 1889.

Early families included Beach, Beatty, Blout, Daniel, Jameson, Lyons, McGuire, and Pryse.  

In 1896 the corner stone for St. Thomas was laid in Beattyville and local craftsmen, including church member Richard N. Lyons, Sr. , labored for seven years to complete the structure. St. Thomas was consecreated on November 15, 1903.
