South Carolina welcomed this California native with six  hurricanes that passed right by, an ice storm as severe as one that occurred 25 years ago, a thunderstorm that blew out the sprinkling system, and four grandchildren who give me lots of hugs.  I like the last part best.
We make lots of homemade ice cream in 20 minutes flat.  My "famous" pancakes (part hazelnut flour) sometimes feed the ducks and the Canadian geese, who seem to stay year-round. Lakeside, the children like to catch minnows or make pinecone rafts to set sail from the dock.
I hope to set sail in a rowboat before the summer is over, in order to avoid the gym.  Oldest grandson is sure he will be able to catch more fish from the boat.  The last time I took him fishing, he hooked 4 turtles, which he released;  just so he doesn't catch the resident alligator, I'll be happy.  However, I just had a tasty piece of fried alligator as an appetizer, and I wouldn't mind if someone else catches that critter!
My grandchildren are the reasons I moved here.  I have been in another state while these four have been growing up. They are 10- 12 - 15 - 17.  Two more live in Idaho, 13 and 10, and wish I could travel there more frequently.

Once in a while, I like to write a little bit about whatever I've been thinking.  BarbieQ's Bits is a bit nostalgic, humorous, introspective at times, folksy at others.  Enjoy...If you pass any of them on, please send it as a link.
Wake-up Call Not your usual alarm...
My father used to call me "Bird Legs."  Check out these gams!
Onve in a while I see one.
This is my home...
Does a crane sing?
From bagpipes to guitars, music is a part of my family's history.    It figures the real talent skipped my generation, but I struggle along for fun on a baby grand I shipped here from California.   I play nearly every day in the music room  behind that third fern.  I'm working on jazz now.  My soul sings.

Pets and kids go together.  Iguana, dogs, a horse, frogs, bird, fish.  Mustn't forget Friendly, the cat who lives next door -  why isn't he catching the gophers?  I have to count the squirrels, ducks, butterflies, and birds, because I spend so much time watching them. Jack has written a hilarious story about his dog, too.

You won't find a pic of a skink; they are too small to photograph.
You should see me smile!

               I WISH YOU ENOUGH
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good bye.

Dave,  who made a difference in Iraq, until health issues sent him home. He died January 3, 2009, after fighting the good fight against cancer for five years longer than they said he could.  My page for him will be here soon. The above poem has helped hold me together for the duration.

See my support
page for his fifth son, who served three tours in Iraq. His second son was deployed to the area as well, and has also safely returned.

My friends have been sending me some of their favorite photos they've taken. So far, we have pictures of leaves, lakes, sunrises, sunsets, monuments, and still-life.  Three are professional artitsts, who have created some beautiful works they are sharing with us here. Take a look, then visit their sites for more of their work.
