References of guns/carriages to Mark Berhow's "American Seacost Defenses:
A Reference Guide" Second Edition, CDSG Press 2004, which will aid you in your
personal research.
Note on GPS coordinates for most of the featured sites:
I used WGS 84 except were noted by "USCGS" or "USACE."
Those marked "USCGS" or "USACE" use NAD 83 and are listed at
http://www.geocaching.com/mark/.
The accuracy between WGS 84 and NAD 83 is slightly off,
but should not cause you any difficulties in finding locations
since many GPS devices allow you to switch between them.
An Endicott period fort named in honor of Major George Armistead, commander
of Fort McHenry during the famous 1814 bombardment from the British Fleet.
It is located at Hawkins Point next to the Key bridge. Batteries here are Battery
Winchester (1900 - 1918), Battery McFarland (1900 - 1917), Battery
Irons (1900 - 1913), and Battery Mudge (1901 - 1920), which is partially
destroyed. A mine casemate is located behind Battery Mudge. Fire Control stations
once existed just down the shoreline from the fort. However, this site has been buried
as some land filling has occured, thus extending the shoreline some distance into
the river.
This fort had a short and uneventful history.
