Make your own English Ballinger DataBase

Over the years I have tried to collate every bit of Ballinger info I could come across. I've combed the LDS site and found that a lot of the stuff listed there is very suspect and in some cases just wishful thinking or worse guesses by the members of this church who have tried to track down their ancestors.

I therefore have removed all entries from this source that did not have a specific date. I reasoned that if a person did not know the date of a Christening, Marriage or Burial it was a guess and therefore suspect.

Even then there a numerous LDS entrys I still have doubts about. There are a couple of classics, where two individuals get married in two or more churches in different locations on the same day. I'll let you make up your minds on the authenticity of this information.

In most cases I have listed where an entry was obtained from ie. LDS, 1851 & 1881 Census, Parish Register or Newspaper Entry, etc, etc. I've tried my best to keep this data correct, but, one or two errors may have have slipped through. So always recheck any result from other sources "before you set your conclusions in stone"

This database is only intended to be used as an investigative tool and should not be used to replace proper genealogical methods such as obtaining copies of original documents etc.

I personally use Microsoft Access and you will note the data that will come up when you access the link below is all delineated ie. separated by commas. This will allow you to import the file into Microsoft Access which I assume most of you will have.

What you should end up with is a file that consists of 13 columns which are labled as follows "Mother" "Father" "Spouse" "First Name" "Family Name" "Sex" "Date" "Comments" "year of birth" "place of birth" "occupation" "Parish" "Town" "County" "Reference (where data came from)"

The smart stuff happens when you start to play with each of the fields ie sorting ascending or decending then cutting and pasting parts you wish into another data base to narrow your search even further. The uses this can be put to are only limited by your imagination.

Setting up your data base

First lets download and save the Data

Down Load Data.

It will take a while to load Its about 500K from memory. Once it Finishes. Select "Edit" then "Select All" then "Copy"

Open up Word for Windows and paste what you have just saved into the document. Save the document as a Text file (do not save it as a word file or you will not be able to import it) into a suitable place ie "My Documents" I suggest you save it as England 100109 (this is the date this info was saved ie 10th Jan 2009) I intend to update this data in future and you will be able to tell if you have the current version.

Now Prepare your data Base

Open Access and in File select "New"
Select "Blank Database"
Save File Name as 100109 then select "Create"
Select File and then "Get External Data"
Browse and select "My Documents"
Select "England 100109" The text file you downloaded and saved.
A window "Import Text Wizard" should open, select "Finish"
then "OK"

Every time I do that I say WOW!! Its almost magic isn't it.

You will now have to add the column headings I have previously described.

You should now have an operational database. Don't forget to save it and to remove the text file you saved to My Documents

Enjoy!!

If you find this is of worth or can see any way I can improve it. Drop me a line (see Index Page)

NB If you wish more information in relation to an entry on the 1851 census, (ie. other persons living at the address) Just let me know what town, the name of the individual and other info you have/want so I can locate it. Dont expect instant response, It may take some time for me to get around to it, but, you will get your answer in due course.

Time indeed is a resource and is something I dont seem to have much of to spare. Roll on retirement!!
