Sailnet FTP Uploading Instructions

12/12/00
Hi All
As the other person who can administer the ftp site, just thought I'd remind people that I'm available also to help anyone with uploading scans or files.
I'd also like to thank anyone and everyone who has something to contribute. It makes for a great source of information.
To help on the technical side of scanning I offer these few suggestions:

Smaller files load quicker, to that end there are things you can do to keep your file sizes small.
1 If its black and white(ie text or line drawing) set your scanner software to B&W or "line art"
2 If it's a Black & White photo, set your software to "grey scale" (or gray scale)
3 Scanning in colour (that's color for most of you he he ) creates the largest files, so should only be used if needed.
Resolution or "dpi" (dots per inch)
Computer monitors only display 72 to 100 dpi or so.
Scanning at higher resolutions creates a larger file than is necessary for viewing on your monitor. (It does print out better however.)

File types (jpg, tiff, gif, eps, bmx, wmf) There are many! The most universal on the web is a .jpg It is also a "compressed" file format so it makes for a smaller file size.

So please, save all scans a .jpg files

At Brian's suggestion we are going to put all the Owners Manuals in a folder called "Manuals" Seems logical! Any questions feel free to contact myself or Brian. And Let me say THANKS again (from all of us) to those who contribute!

P.S. If that sound all to complicated you can just scan it send it to us and we can optimize it for you.

Please DO NOT creat a new folder....Please don't do this... I battled just to get open access for one folder (upload)... Sailnet was reluctant to do that for the very reason that people tend to go and do their own thing and before you know it the specific area is overloaded !!!!!!
As I've said many times before, if you have something to contribute, certainly upload it to:
ftp://ftp.sailnet.com/Cal/upload/
Please, please, please include a text file that describes what you've uploaded.... We aren't all mind readers ! In fact, if you bother to read the "readme.txt" file included on our main index page you'll see it is a **requirement** of our hosts Sailnet.
Once you have uploaded, email me (anzam1@earthlink.net) or Richard Fuller (sailpair@yahoo.com) direct and tell us what you've done. Richard and I are the only list members authorized for full access to all our FTP functions. If you aren't able to upload and have something to contribute, email it to either one of us as attachments. The above is not a request so much as a demand!! Either these simple processes are followed or we will lose any means to upload.

---------------------------------------------- I've often had requests re how to upload pix to the FTP server, so I've been going thru my archives and have compiled the following:

Courtesy of our list host, Sailnet, we have space on their FTP server. This allows us to save photos of our boats, how-to articles, copies of sales literature/owners manuals etc. in an easily readable/accessible format.

To view all the boat (makes) spaces they have setup, go to: ftp://ftp.sailnet.com

To go straight to the CAL menu:

ftp://ftp.sailnet.com/Cal

Note that the "C" in Cal is case specific.

Two of our members have been granted full access to the area, everyone else is limited to viewing; downloading; plus uploading to a specific folder (called "Upload").

To upload to the area, you can use your Netscape browser, or Microsoft Outlook, or best of all use an FTP specific software package... There are a number of these available on the 'net.. I use WS_FTP Lite, but I'm not conversant with what's available for Mac systems.

Uploading procedure... This is for you to upload pics, scanned documents, etc.

The procedure for putting stuff on the server is to upload into the UPLOAD folder and then contact either myself , telling us what you put up and what it is all about. If you upload a number of pix, please **PLEASE** take the time to include a "readme.txt" file containing a description of each of the pix you uploaded... Other members are not mind readers. We will then create a folder for you and move your files into it.

How do you upload files????

If you have a Netscape browser you can:
1. Go to the ftp UPLOAD folder. ftp://ftp.sailnet.com/Cal/upload

2. In Netscape, click on File/new/navigator window.

3. Resize/position the new window so you can see part of the original window (with upload folder showing).

4. In the new window, click on file/open page. Click on browse and find the directory where the files you are uploading reside. 5. Now you can "drag-n-drop" each of the files, in turn, into the server upload folder.

When you are finished, close the new window and you will see your files listed in the upload folder. Should you not be able to make this process work, send the files to either myself, or Richard, as email attachments and we'll handle it from there for you. Have fun,
