Australian Embassy in Jakarta shut down
A section of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta had to be shut down and cleaned
earlier today after a diplomat received an envelope containing a white powder.
Mark Bowling reports from Jakarta, the envelope and its contents have been sent for
testing.
The Public Affairs section of the Australian Embassy received an envelope this
morning sent by an organisation with the acronym, Antrak. Translated into English the
name of the Organisation stands for homeless children because of corruption. An
Embassy worker who handled the envelope was immediately showered and the area
cleared and thoroughly cleaned. The envelope containing a white powder has been
sent to a laboratory in Jakarta for testing but the results are not known yet. The
Department of Foreign Affairs says it has a detailed procedure for dealing with such
incidence and in this case the procedure was followed carefully.
