Dry Tortugas National Park - location of Fort Jefferson

Fort Jefferson was used as a deterent around the time of the Spanish-American war.



Very large cannon. Weight is approximately 9800lbs. Position on the top of a 3-story, 45 foot wall.



Plant found inside the walls of the fort.



This was the second lighthouse erected. It's survived at least one hurricane.



24 inch smooth bore cannon. Could fire a 300lb projectile 3 miles. Most advanced cannon of it's time, circa 1845.



The thin stretch of sand was deposited by a hurricane.



The dark water is a channel that ships from the 1800's would use to sail between this island
and the far island. It's approximately 30 feet deep on either side of the sand bar.
