| Dear Letters Editor: The press is fawning over the "agony" of Janet Reno who is "shocked, shocked!" to discover that the FBI did indeed use pyrotechnics at the Waco massacre. But their sympathy lies with the wrong person. The real sympathy should be for the children massacred by her "child abuse" claims at Waco, and before that the innocent people sent to jail in Florida by DA Janet Reno for nonexistent child abuse activities. Most people have forgotten that one of the initial reasons Reno gave for the initial botched Waco attack was "reports of child abuse" at Waco. These TOTALLY UNSUBSTANTIATED claims were later quietly dropped, and the press let it go. In fact, it was never clear if ANYONE had even brought up such claims except for Reno herself (in her thinking, children in a "cult" are by definition suffering child abuse). Of course, Reno's attack at Waco is the ultimate example of child abuse. But most do not realize that hysterical prosecution of bogus child abuse cases is what made Janet Reno's career. She came to the Clinton administration's attention largely for these cases in Miami. Back in the 1980's some DA's were practicing Salem witchhunts, a la THE CRUCIBLE, the chilling play that covers similar prosecutions. Reno was at the front of that charge, tossing innocent people in jail on the flimsiest of evidence, or no evidence at all, and suppressing evidence of innocence.
