Antelope Valley Libertarian Party

Dear Senator/Assemblyman:

Please vote no on Senate Bill 273, which raises the penalty for simple possession of marijuana to $1,000 (current penalty: $100.00). Like all good intentions, it's effect will be opposite that intended. Even if its only intent is for government to make more money, the net income after prosecution and incarceration costs will be negative and violent criminals will be pushed onto the streets to make room for non-violent offenders.

There is nothing wrong with drug use. Drug abuse is a medical problem. Treating it as a criminal problem only makes matters worse for everyone, including the abuser. Just like alcohol prohibition, the drug prohibition cure is far worse than the disease.

Sincerely,

Bill Holmes, Vice Chair
