In one of her interviews, Morrison said that in her writing she aims for

"a reliance on a particular kind of character that might be called an "an ancestor" those timeless people whose relationships to the characters are benevolent, instructive, and protective and who provide a certain kind of wisdom."

The timeless quality of the person is relevant for it's function as an anchor.
