Because we do not use a specific curriculum, my wife had to write most of the course descriptions from scratch. Here are a few examples of her descriptions...

Course Descriptions

Math

Algebra I: Course focuses on the standard topics of algebra: signed numbers, exponents and roots, the evaluation of such expressions, scientific notation, unit conversions, solutions with one unknown, algebra of polynomials and rational expressions, word problems, graphing solutions of simultaneous equations, and the Pythagorean theorem are taught. English

English Composition: Course includes writing of paragraphs, whole compositions. Vocabulary studies are included for expression in writing. Independent writing course directed by tutor. Elements covered were sensory experiences, point of view, creative writing, exposition, research and revision. Materials include Writing Strands, Level 6, published by National Writing Institute and many independent writing projects. (1 credit)


Science

Biology: Basic study of general biology including botany, human anatomy and physiology, life sciences, zoology and cellular and molecular biology. Special attention in botany focuses on wilderness survival and forests; in zoology, animals in the wild, their habitats, ocean life and environmental questions. In addition to basic human anatomy, focus on effects of tumors, alcoholism, drugs and nutrition are studied. (1 credit)

Marine Biology: Study of marine life in the Florida Keys area; specifically animals living in and around coral reefs, identification of habitat, eating habits and preferences. Three- month seminar taught by Ph.D. in Marine Biology with experience in study of coral reefs, and the Florida Keys area. Student participated in independent identification of fish and sea creatures on nine- day sailing and snorkeling trip to Florida Keys. (1/2 credit)
