COMET HALE-BOPP PHOTOS FROM ST.CROIX

by

James A. Petrait

Comet Hale-Bopp made a good showing on St.Croix for over 6 weeks. Here are some copies of photos that I originally made with a 35 mm film camera around 7:30 PM on April 9, 1997, looking in a NW direction from St. Joseph High School on St.Croix. I made .jpg files of the photos by copying them with a color quick cam from several inches away from the prints. Then I adjusted the contrast and brightness and color-enhanced 2 of the photos using a NIH program on my MAC powerbook. You may copy these photos but be sure to give me credit for taking them if you publish them again.

Is the artifact that appears in the lower part of the photo a flying saucer? Or is it the lights from the hillside in the NW direction? The first possibility is certainly interesting but I think that the evidence points to the latter explanation.

I saw Comet Hale-Bopp for the last time on May 20, 1997. What will the Earth be like when it returns again in several thousand years? If life exists on the Earth at that time, will it have the ability to retrieve these photos of Comet Hale-Bopp and this message from the past?
