MATCH REPORT:
Athenry produced a much improved performance against a Claregalway
team fighting for relegation. Athenry attacked from the start and
good work involving Murphy, Madden and Coffey saw the keeper save
at Coffey's feet. The keeper again made a great save as Madden was
put through and he again saved at his feet. Eddie Fox then went
close from a Somers corner. Athenry played some lovely football
down both flanks with Maloney and Hynes dominating the centre of
the park. Athenry conceded another poor goal before half time when
the ball should have been cleared.
Athenry continued to play good football and Quigley and Madden both
went close. Athenry finally equalised when a great ball from Quigley
put McCarthy through and his shot was saved by the keeper but Mike
Madden scored the rebound. Athenry should have won the game when
a great one two between Madden and Murphy saw the keeper again save
brilliantly from Madden. Quigley, 'O' Grady and Murphy all went
close before the end. Best for Athenry were Tony Walsh, Joe Maloney,
Neil Murphy, Neville Hynes and Mike Madden with great support from
all 16 players used.

a strong wind putting together some very impressive passing movements.

the ball narrowly over the bar. More good work from Coffey and Walsh
saw Callinan through only to drive the ball narrowly wide. With
wingers Murphy and McCarthy continuing to fire over some good crosses

of play from a corner after poor Athenry defending. Athenry keeper

keep Athenry in the game. Athenry rallied and a good run from Murphy
saw him fouled and from the free kick Finn bent the ball from 40
yards in to the bottom corner. Finn was unlucky when a brilliant
volley just dipped over the bar. Coffey, Murphy and 'O' Grady then
saw brilliant shots blocked on the edge of the area. Athenry started
the second half on top and went in to the lead after 10 minutes
after good work from Neary, Flaherty and Coffey saw Finn put Callinan
through and he buried the ball in to the top corner. Athenry increased
their lead when Thomas, Walsh and coffey combined for finn to play
another superb ball through for McCarthy to race through from the
halfway line to score in the bottom corner. Athenry sat back a bit
too much in the last 15 minutes and Tuam got a second in the last
few minutes. All 15 players played well with Brian McDonagh, Niall
Thomas, Paul Flaherty, Gary Coffey, Wayne Finn and Ciaran Callinan
outstanding.
