My Personal Flag
 


 

I designed this flag as a pun on my name. "Kirsch" in German means "cherry", hence the choice of the red color and the cherry blossom badge. The design of the flag has some interesting mathematics behind it. The ancient Greeks held that the ideal proportion for a rectangle (used, for example, in the Parthenon at Athens) was the so-called "Golden Ratio", in which the short side was to the long side as the long side is to the sum of the two.

This works out to not quite 3 x 5 (actually 3 x 4.854...) and is in fact quite pleasant. The distance from the blossom to the fly is in the golden ratio to the entire length. Likewise the vertical is divided in that ratio between the red and the white, and the lower part divided yet again in that proportion between the white and the blue.

The shades are "Old Glory Red" as a patriotic gesture, but "Dodger Blue" recalling my youth (which ended in 1957, when the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles.) The photo below is a small testimony to my loyalties:
