A low wall behind the Tua Pek Kong temple allowed members to cross from the temple enclosure to the adjancent Khoo Kongsi .
When secret societies were outlawed in 1890, the Khian Teik reconstitited its assets to several registered societies, namely the Poh Hock Seah, Hokkien Kongsi, Cheng Hoe Seah and Tong Kheng Seah, all of which are still based in this temple today. The poh Hock Seah carries on the religious traditions of the Khian Teik. The secret society prohibition resulted in the formation of many new Chinese associations in the early 1890s, which account for so many centenary celebrations in Penang in this decade.
