The Tua Pek Kong Temple

Hock Teik Cheng Sin, popularly known as the Tua Pek Kong Temple, is dedicated to the God of Prosperity. The temple is accessible through a narrow gateway at 57 Armenian Street and a secret passage through one of the row of shophouses owned by the temple.

The carefully concealled temple was formerly base of the Khian Teik secret society founded by Khoo Teng Pang in the 1840s.

A low wall behind the Tua Pek Kong temple allowed members to cross from the temple enclosure to the adjancent Khoo Kongsi .

When secret societies were outlawed in 1890, the Khian Teik reconstitited its assets to several registered societies, namely the Poh Hock Seah, Hokkien Kongsi, Cheng Hoe Seah and Tong Kheng Seah, all of which are still based in this temple today.

The poh Hock Seah carries on the religious traditions of the Khian Teik.

The secret society prohibition resulted in the formation of many new Chinese associations in the early 1890s, which account for so many centenary celebrations in Penang in this decade.
