The Coat Muslin
One garment that I really wanted to make was a fabulous double-breasted coat. I liked the idea of cutting the front away, but leaving the back long to create a cape-like effect (and to show off the pretty lining!). What was crucial here was to make sure that the fit in the shoulders and under the bust was perfect, because if not, the weight of the back skirt would pull the coat something fierce.

The Finished Coat
The coat is made from a plaid wool, interlined with silk organza, and lined with bronze Indian silk dupioni. The bodice seams are lightly boned and the coat closes in front with six brown leather buttons from Joanns. The same buttons also close the sleeve plackets and decorate the top of the back pleats.
