Safari/Adventurer Steampunk Ensemble

For information on other pieces of this ensemble, see the links to the left. For pictures of the final outfit, click [here].

See my gallery opening, September 2008.

The Vest Muslin
The vest for this ensemble is similar in silhouette to the Working Class vest. Since this ensemble does not include a faux bustle, I inserted an inverted semi-circle cutout of box pleats at the back hem to mimic the 'poof' of a bustle with a slimmer line. This curve is also echoed in the front hem and scoop neckline.

The In-Progress Vest
A few pictures of the vest in progress. I boned the bodice with lightweight plastic boning at the center front edges, along the entire length of the front and back darts, and to the waist for the side and back seams. I first encased the boning in tubes I made from the lining fabric and then hand stitched everything in place (picture #6 below).

The Finished Vest
The vest is made from a cream and chocolate varigated raw silk, interlined with silk organza, and lined with matching chocolate silk habotai. The vest is lightly boned, and closes in front with wood and metal buttons from Joanns. The same buttons also decorate the faux pocket flaps in front.

Gallery Exhibition
This vest was part of a gallery exhibition for upperclassmen, graduate, and faculty apparel designers in my department. Even though the pants for this ensemble were finished (as of September 2008), my department has very few mannequins with legs so I decided to display the vest with a store-bought pleated skirt. Not entirely kosher but I hate displaying stand alone pieces (not shown as an ensemble) and as it is, the vest still remains the focal point of the outfit. :) I would have included the coat with it, but it still wasn't finished at this point!
