Working Class Steampunk Ensemble
or "A New Newsie"

For information on other pieces of this ensemble, see the links to the left. For pictures of the final outfit, click [here].

The Pants Muslin
I had a devil of a time creating the pants pattern for this ensemble. I think I did 20 muslins before I had to just accept that the pattern wasn't perfect. Pants are EVIL. I forgot to take a picture of the muslin on me before ripping it apart to use the pieces as my pattern, so here's a picture of the pant muslin spread out.

The Finished Pants
The capri pants are made from plaid wool fully lined with copper-colored silk habotai. The waistband is interlined with silk organza and interfaced for extra stability. The pants have 5" slits at the hem and faux leather straps at the knee decorated with square 1 1/2" antique gold buckles. The straps were formed by creating a tube that were then topstitched before handstitching them to the pants (while ensuring the lining was not caught when sewing).

The Accessories
I accessorized the outfit with the requisite steampunk goggles (Harry Potter Quidditch Goggles) and a suede newsboy cap that I found for $12.50 at a local Dressbarn. The dark brown shoes that I wear in the final pictures are a mix of suede and faux leather, and are my absolute favorite pair of heels. The earrings are amber-colored glass teardrops that I purchased in Bellagio, Italy on a summer trip to Europe.
