Three-Tiered Coat
or "Purple Tiers"

This was one of three projects for my Pattern-making and Grading class. We created a line based around a central design and then drafted a pattern from a size 12 sloper. One of the stipulations was that the final garment had a kimono sleeve so that was one of the main aspects of the design. I really like this coat and love the material; I haven't had a chance to wear it anywhere yet but I will...believe me I will. :)

The Coat
The final coat is all one piece (obviously) but I had quite a few pattern pieces since the design features a tiered effect. The bottom tier is one large piece, the middle is sewn onto that, and then the top is a shorter version of the bottom. The sleeves were made part of the body of the coat, as a kimono sleeve does, so there's no seam line there. Also, the entire coat was lined and took a bit of working in order to get everything enclosed and finished right. The ends of each tier - both sleeve and hem - are finished with cream colored bias tape from the same fabric as the lining. Cream colored ribbon was stitched just above that with tight zig-zag stitch. The front is closed by a thread hook and a pearl button. The hardest part of this garment was getting all of the pieces sewn together in the correct order and clean finished.

For the photo shoot, Maggie modeled for me. She crimped her hair and wore a black skirt, black strapless bra, and knee high boots (same boots for the Regina Davis costume). The jewelery is amethyst - the necklace was purchased on a cruise stop in Turkey and the earrings are from a local mine in Virginia.
