IKEBANA JOURNAL

March 8, 2003 : I made these for a workshop.  I really enjoyed starting my day with quietly creating these.  I'm not sure how well they adhere to true ikebana rules as I've only had the one class and what I learned is fading fast.  Still, I like them no matter what.
This is three irises.  It is hard to go wrong with irises.  The left one may be a too tall.  I think it and the right one need to be slightly shorter..  After I snapped this, I put some iris leaves in the back center to fill in.  I have no idea what the wispy yellow stuff is.  I bought it for the texture then realised it has a light, sweet, vanilla fragrance, as wispy as the flowers themselves.  It reminded me of the fragrance I kept smelling on the Tarawera Falls Outlet walk in New Zealand, on the top of the hill above the falls.
This is my Easter Bunny ikebana: two ears and a puffy tail!  Two stalks of snapdragons, a single iris, a big mum, and some yellow daisies.  This one I think may really blow ikebana conformity to the winds but still I like it.  Obviously I was on a yellow-purple kick.  I'm longing for spring, I think!  It can be hard to arrange in a dark green bowl because foliage doesn't stand out, but I had enough yellow to counterbalance.  I would have liked some softer greens to fill in around the mum but I didn't have any.
And here is what may be my favourite although I keep changing my mind.  An iris, two red caranations, yellow daisies and iris leaves.  I really like the contrast in textures of the flowers from the sleek iris and its leaves, to the frill of the carnations to the soft, casual daisies.   I really like the splash of red.
