What is chiropractics? The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) states that chiropractic practitioners consider the human body as an integrated being. According to ACA, chiropractors give special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects including structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, nutritional, emotional and environmental relationships.

Under the chiropractic philosophy, all bodily functions are considered controlled by the nervous system. Practitioners of chiropractic believe that abnormal bodily functions, including pain, may be caused by interference with nerve transmission and expression.

According to the International Chiropractors Association, misaligned vertebrae -- often referred to as subluxation -- can irritate roots and blood vessels, which branch off from the spinal cord between each vertebra. The irritation, in turn, causes pain and dysfunction in muscle, lymphatic and organ tissue as well as imbalance in the normal body processes.

Chiropractic treatment is primarily used as therapy for neuromusculoskeletal disorders and related conditions, most commonly back pain, neck pain and headaches. Chiropractors also treat other problems including cerebral palsy.
