As most of my friends know, Saturday, August 9, 1997, my husband I celebrated our first wedding anniversary by spending a weekend out of town. We made no plans, and no lodging accomodations. Thus, Friday and Saturday nights were spent searching for hotels/motels with vacancies, at a reasonable price.
After several hours and many miles of disappointment, we came upon a motel in South Williamsport, PA (directly across from the Little League Baseball Musuem and International Headquarters.) It boasted great rates...and vacancies! Both claims turned out to be true.
Once we reached our room we realized for less than $50 we received a nicer room for less money than the national discount chain hotel we stayed with just the night before. But our experience was not over.
Robert and I decided to head down to the hotel restaurant for dessert, before toasting the end of the evening which was our first wedding anniversary. The restaurant was lovely, and we were greeted by a bubbly employee named Gladys, who would be our server. We explained we were only there for dessert; she quickly brought the tray and cheerfully described each choice. We ordered only cheesecake and drinks. During some of the small talk I mentioned it was our anniversary. Within minutes Gladys returned with a tray. In the dark room all we could see were lit sparklers moving towards our table. As she drew nearer, we were able to recognize the shape of champagne flutes. The sparklers were in these flutes. Gladys announced, "In honor of your first anniversary, complimentary champagne!"
I was speechless. Our total bill was less than $15, and we received free champagne! This had to be the most incredible display of customer service I had ever witnessed. I savored my champagne with tears flowing.
Gladys was rewarded with a 67% tip (yes, that's right!) but I still felt this wasn't enough. So here, for all the world to see, is my thank you to the Kings Motel in South Williamsport, PA, for making my first wedding anniversary a truly memorable night. You have earned a customer for life!
If you will ever be travelling to the northern Pennsylvania area, make them your first choice. AAA rated them 2 diamonds, but from me, they get four big smileys! If you want to contact them, email me and I'll give you their address and phone number!
