GEWURZPLATZCHEN
(Spice Cookies)
(Yield: 2 dozen)

2½ cups self-rising flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon allspice
½ cup butter or margarine, softened
¼ cup shortening
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
¼ cup molasses
Sugar

In a medium bowl combine flour, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and allspice; mix well.  Set aside.

Preheat oven to 350°F.  Spray baking sheets with non-stick vegetable spray.

In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening, and sugar until light and fluffy.  Add egg and molasses; beat until well blended.  Stir in flour mixture until blended.  Shape dough into ¾-inch balls.  Place, 2-inches apart, on prepared baking sheets.  Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass that has been greased and dipped in sugar.

Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned.  Remove from baking sheets; cool completely on a wire rack.
